Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has openly criticized the England cricket team following a controversy surrounding the post-match handshake ritual. The issue arose after England players reportedly refrained from shaking hands with Indian cricketers Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja after a tightly fought contest. The act was seen by many as disrespectful and against the sportsmanship traditions of international cricket.
Speaking on a television sports panel, Gambhir expressed strong disapproval of England's conduct, labeling it as disappointing and immature. He emphasized that cricket has always been known as a gentleman’s game and that such actions do not align with the core values the sport represents. According to Gambhir, win or lose, players are expected to show mutual respect, especially in front of large crowds and international audiences.
Gambhir said that gestures like a handshake or a brief moment of acknowledgment go a long way in building camaraderie between teams. “Shaking hands after a match is not just a formality, it is a mark of respect for the game, your opponents, and the fans watching worldwide,” he said. The former cricketer also pointed out that while intense competition is natural in international cricket, professionalism should not be compromised.
Gambhir also came out strongly in support of Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja, praising their performance and composure throughout the match. He said that both players represented India with pride and handled the situation with dignity, even though the lack of sportsmanship from the other side could have provoked a negative response. “Sundar and Jadeja kept their cool, and that is what makes them true professionals,” Gambhir noted.
The incident has sparked a wider debate across cricketing circles, with several fans and analysts questioning the behaviour of the England team. While no official statement has been released by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), the controversy has already made headlines across sports media platforms.
Former players and coaches have also weighed in, some calling for the International Cricket Council (ICC) to re-emphasize the importance of post-match decorum. While on-field rivalries are part of the game, many agree that traditions like the handshake are crucial for maintaining the game’s integrity and spirit.
Gambhir concluded his comments by reminding young players and upcoming athletes that how one behaves off the field matters just as much as performance on it. He urged cricket boards and team managers to instill strong values in players from the grassroots level.
As the debate continues, many fans are now waiting to see whether any clarification or apology will be issued by the England side. Regardless of the outcome, this incident has reignited discussions about respect, tradition, and the true meaning of sportsmanship in modern cricket.
