Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of the Indian cricket team, has unexpectedly flown back to India following India’s impressive 295-run victory over Australia in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Perth. The victory, which was a commanding performance by the Indian team, was achieved under the leadership of stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah, who bowled an exceptional 8/72 to help India dominate the Aussies.

The reason for Gambhir’s sudden departure is a personal family emergency, which sources indicate is related to a health concern within his family. Gambhir informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about the situation, and the board has granted him leave to attend to the matter. "Gambhir has informed us that he will be travelling back home and will join the team before the start of the second Test. He has cited personal reasons, and the BCCI has accepted his request," a source told Indian Express.

Gambhir is expected to return to Australia on December 3, ahead of the second Test in Adelaide, which is a day-night fixture set to begin on December 6. His absence from the coaching staff comes at a critical time for Indian cricket. India’s victory in Perth, where Bumrah’s extraordinary bowling performance took center stage, has propelled the team to the top of the World Test Championship standings. The win also provided a rare moment of joy for Gambhir, who has faced some criticism in the past for his decisions, especially his support for younger players like Reddy and Harshit. However, his faith in these players has now been validated, as their contributions were key to India’s success in the first Test.

While Gambhir is away, the Indian team will be overseen by the support staff, including assistant coaches Abhishek Nayar, Ryan ten Doeschate, bowling coach Morne Morkel, and fielding coach T Dilip. The management is confident that the team will continue to perform well in his absence. Meanwhile, Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who had missed the first Test due to the birth of his son, has rejoined the squad. Rohit was seen in the Indian dressing room on Day 4 of the Perth Test and was later spotted practicing with the pink ball ahead of the second Test.

Gambhir’s return to India, while unfortunate under the circumstances, is a reminder of the personal challenges that players and staff face behind the scenes. The team’s resilience, both on and off the field, remains intact as they prepare for the next challenge in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
