The International Cricket Council arranged alternative travel plans for members of the West Indies national cricket team and the South Africa national cricket team after a charter flight scheduled to depart from Kolkata was cancelled due to logistical issues.
According to officials familiar with the development the teams had been preparing to travel on a chartered aircraft following their elimination from the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. However the flight was cancelled which created unexpected travel difficulties for the players and support staff.
In response the International Cricket Council arranged commercial airline tickets for all members of both teams. Because of seat availability and scheduling constraints players were booked on different flights operated by various airlines rather than travelling together on a single aircraft.
Sources said the ICC coordinated the arrangements quickly to avoid further inconvenience to the players. Individual bookings were made to ensure that every player and member of the support staff could begin their journey home as soon as possible.
ICC chairman Jay Shah reportedly spoke directly with players to reassure them that their travel arrangements were being handled and that the organisation would ensure their safe return.
The travel disruption occurred after both teams had already concluded their participation in the tournament. Following their elimination from the T20 World Cup the players remained in Kolkata while waiting for transportation arrangements to return home.
Officials indicated that international travel conditions and logistical complications contributed to the cancellation of the charter flight. Reports also suggested that regional tensions and restrictions affecting certain international airspace routes may have played a role in complicating travel planning for charter services.
As a result commercial airlines became the most practical option for moving the players back to their respective destinations. While the teams will not travel together the ICC ensured that the bookings were coordinated carefully so that players could depart within a reasonable time frame.
Tournament organisers often rely on charter flights to transport teams during major international competitions because it allows for greater flexibility in scheduling. However unforeseen logistical issues can sometimes disrupt such arrangements.
Cricket authorities emphasised that the safety and comfort of players remains the highest priority in situations involving travel disruptions. By arranging individual flights the ICC aimed to minimise delays and ensure that players could begin their return journeys without extended waiting periods.
The T20 World Cup 2026 has seen participation from several international teams and involved travel across multiple venues. Coordinating transportation for teams after the tournament is a complex task that requires planning with airlines airport authorities and security agencies.
Despite the travel setback the quick intervention by the ICC helped resolve the situation and allowed players from both teams to proceed with their journeys home.
