ICC to Decide on India–Pakistan Fixture Arrangement at T20 World Cup 2026

The final draw, expected shortly after the annual meeting, will confirm whether the world’s most heated cricket rivalry will open the tournament or await a climactic showdown in the business end of the competition.

Dubai:

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is poised to make a significant call on the scheduling of the much-anticipated India–Pakistan match at the T20 World Cup 2026 when its annual meeting convenes from July 17 to 20. This decision could mark a departure from past practice, in which the two arch-rivals were routinely drawn together in the group stages to maximise viewership and commercial revenue.

India and Pakistan fixtures have long been the marquee events of any ICC tournament, often attracting global television audiences exceeding 300 million. However, escalating regional tensions and security considerations have prompted cricketing authorities to re-examine the traditional approach. A senior official familiar with the deliberations told PTI that the ICC will balance the commercial benefits of an early India–Pakistan clash against potential diplomatic and logistical challenges.

“While fans always look forward to the group-stage encounter, current geo-political factors cannot be ignored,” said the source. “The ICC must ensure that the tournament runs smoothly and that both teams can participate without security or political distractions.”

Under one proposed model, India and Pakistan would be placed in separate groups, thus guaranteeing a meeting only if both nations advance to the Super Eight or knockout rounds. This format has precedent in other multi-team sports events where high-profile matchups are deferred to later stages to mitigate risk while preserving competitive integrity.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is understood to be open to the ICC’s proposal, provided that the overall tournament structure remains equitable for all participating nations. A BCCI insider indicated that India’s cricket board “recognises the importance of staging an India–Pakistan match, but supports a solution that safeguards athletes and officials.”

Conversely, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has traditionally favoured an early-stage clash, citing its value in promoting the game and engaging a youthful fanbase. Nonetheless, recent neutral-venue arrangements for Champions Trophy fixtures, and agreements to host matches outside the subcontinent, suggest that both boards may now prioritise continuity over convention.

Logistics will also influence the ICC’s final determination. The 2026 edition, co-hosted by the United States and West Indies, presents unique operational challenges. Venue allocation, travel distances, and time-zone differences will all factor into the scheduling formula. Ensuring broadcast windows in major markets such as India and Pakistan will remain a priority, given the financial stakes.

Cricket analysts note that deferring the India–Pakistan encounter to the knockout phase could enhance competitive fairness. “In some ways, delaying the fixture increases its sporting significance,” explained former Test all-rounder Ajay Sharma. “A quarter-final or semi-final meeting carries more weight and can be a fitting climax for the global audience.”

As the ICC gears up for its July assembly, all eyes will be on the proposed fixture maps and the accompanying statements from member boards. The final draw, expected shortly after the annual meeting, will confirm whether the world’s most heated cricket rivalry will open the tournament or await a climactic showdown in the business end of the competition.
