IND vs AUS: SCG Sets New Record for Highest Day 1 Crowd in Any Test Between India and Australia

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy has been captivating cricket fans across Australia, and on Friday, January 3, the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) created a historic moment by setting a new record for the highest Day 1 crowd in any Test match between India and Australia. This milestone follows the recent crowd-breaking achievements in the series, with the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) also witnessing record-breaking numbers.

Just a few days ago, the India-Australia Boxing Day Test at the MCG broke the all-time crowd record for any Test match played in Australia, drawing a staggering 373,691 spectators over the course of the match. Following that success, the SCG has now made its mark by surpassing the previous attendance record for a Day 1 crowd in a Test between India and Australia, which stood at 44,901, set back in 2004. The new record at SCG now stands at over 45,000 spectators, further emphasizing the enormous popularity and significance of this ongoing series.

Both Cricket Australia and the SCG's official X (formerly Twitter) account took to social media to celebrate this achievement. Cricket Australia posted, "The records keep on falling. Over 45,000 through the gates of the Sydney Cricket Ground on Day 1," while the SCG proudly announced, "It's a DAY 1 RECORD for any test against India at the SCG! 45,000+ in the house."

Despite this new Day 1 attendance record, the overall record for the highest attendance at a Test match on Day 1 at SCG still remains 46,070, which was achieved during the 2007 Ashes Test between Australia and England. Nevertheless, this achievement highlights the incredible interest in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy and showcases the passionate following of both India and Australia in the cricketing world.

The significance of these record-breaking crowds is not just about the numbers but also about the impact of the India-Australia rivalry. It continues to attract massive support, underscoring the strong connection between these two cricketing powerhouses and their loyal fan bases. The large turnout at SCG further cements the enduring legacy and appeal of Test cricket in Australia, particularly during the high-stakes Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.

As the match continues, all eyes will be on the on-field action, but for now, the cricketing world is celebrating this remarkable achievement that has added to the growing list of records set in this historic series.
