Former Australian cricketer Ian Chappell has highlighted the importance of maintaining the fitness of Team India's key players, Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant, ahead of their upcoming Test matches. Chappell believes India's main focus should be on ensuring that these two vital players remain fit, while also working to get the rest of the squad into form as they prepare for crucial World Test Championship (WTC) series.
Rishabh Pant made a stellar return to Test cricket by scoring a century, reaffirming his value as a match-winner in the longer format. His aggressive style of play and ability to turn the game around with his batting make him an integral part of India's Test side. On the other hand, Jasprit Bumrah, the pace spearhead, was at his lethal best in the recently concluded match against Bangladesh in Chennai, delivering consistent breakthroughs with his exceptional bowling.
While Pant and Bumrah played significant roles in the match, it was Chennai’s local hero, Ravichandran Ashwin, who showcased his all-round brilliance. Ashwin's efforts with both bat and ball helped Rohit Sharma's team clinch a resounding 280-run victory over Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday (September 22). With this win, India further strengthened their position at the top of the World Test Championship standings and is now well-placed to secure their third consecutive spot in the WTC Final.
India’s upcoming WTC schedule includes three home Tests against New Zealand, followed by five crucial away Tests against Australia. As these series will be vital in determining India’s road to the WTC Final at Lord’s next year, Chappell emphasized that keeping Pant and Bumrah in top form will be crucial. With a fair amount of red-ball cricket left before the final, Chappell believes that these two players will play a critical role in India's success and ability to compete at the highest level.
Chappell’s remarks come at a time when India is riding high on confidence after a string of victories, but he has cautioned that player fitness will be a key factor in sustaining this momentum. With the pressure mounting as India aims to clinch their third successive WTC Final berth, the fitness of Pant and Bumrah will be paramount as they prepare for upcoming challenges.
