The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced a new 10-point Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the Indian cricket team, which has stirred considerable debate among players and officials. The implementation of these guidelines comes after India's disappointing performance in the recent series against Australia, and the BCCI aims to instill a stronger work ethic and commitment among the players. One of the major changes introduced in the SOP is the directive that all players must travel together on the team bus, with no separate vehicles to be arranged for individual players by state cricket associations. This move is aimed at promoting unity and team spirit, ensuring that players bond and travel as a collective unit.
The new policy was enforced beginning with the India vs. England T20I series opener in Kolkata on January 22, 2025. Snehasish Ganguly, the President of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), confirmed the adherence to these new rules, stating that the association has complied with the BCCI's directives. "In keeping with the BCCI's 10-point guidelines, the Cricket Association of Bengal has not arranged any separate means of transport. Only a team bus has been arranged for the Indian team. There won't be any personal vehicles for the cricketers. We have to follow the guidelines, which clearly state that all players are expected to travel with the team to and from matches and practice sessions," Ganguly confirmed to PTI.
The 10-point policy aims to ensure that all players attend the entirety of scheduled practice sessions, with collective travel being a cornerstone of the new guidelines. The BCCI has made it clear that the guidelines are not intended as a punishment but rather a way to foster greater discipline and commitment within the team. Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector of the Indian team, clarified, "It is not a punishment." However, not all players are fully on board with every aspect of the new SOP.
India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, expressed concerns about certain parts of the policy, particularly the restrictions on the amount of time players can spend with their families during tours. Speaking about the issue on January 18, 2025, Rohit shared that the team had concerns regarding this restriction, although the BCCI has already begun enforcing other parts of the SOP, such as the travel policy. Despite these reservations, the BCCI is adamant about ensuring the smooth implementation of the guidelines, particularly in light of the team's recent performances.
The current Indian squad, led by Suryakumar Yadav for the T20I series, will adhere to these updated directives throughout the series. Following the first match in Kolkata, the team will head to Chennai for the second game, with all travel and logistical arrangements aligning with the newly enforced guidelines. The BCCI's 10-point SOP is expected to remain in effect for the entirety of the India vs. England series, with the hope that it will lead to more disciplined performances on the field and a stronger sense of unity among the players.
As the series progresses, it remains to be seen how these new rules will affect the dynamics of the team, and whether they will lead to improved performances in upcoming matches. The implementation of these measures highlights the BCCI's focus on maintaining a high standard of discipline and professionalism, even as the players prepare for intense international competition.
