Sears' injury, coupled with Williamson's uncertain availability, adds to the challenges the team will face as they look to compete against a strong Indian side.

New Zealand’s right-arm fast bowler Ben Sears has been ruled out of the upcoming three-Test series against India due to a knee injury. The injury is a significant blow to the New Zealand squad, as they were already facing a tough challenge in the series, which starts on Wednesday in Bengaluru. Adding to their concerns, former captain Kane Williamson is also unlikely to play in the first Test.

Sears had been delayed in joining the team after experiencing discomfort in his left knee during New Zealand’s recent Test series against Sri Lanka. After returning to New Zealand, scans revealed a meniscus tear in his knee, leading the medical team to explore various treatment options. Despite initial hopes that Sears might recover in time for the series, further medical advice confirmed that he would need more time to heal, prompting the decision to withdraw him from the India tour.

New Zealand Cricket confirmed the decision in a statement: "After following medical advice, the decision was made to rule him out of the series. A plan for his treatment and rehabilitation will be advised in due course."

Sears, 25, made an impressive Test debut in March this year against Australia, where he picked up five wickets in his lone appearance. His ability to bowl at genuine pace made him a promising prospect for the team, and his absence is seen as a significant setback. Head coach Gary Stead expressed his disappointment, saying, "We're obviously disappointed for Ben, who had a strong start to his Test career during the home summer and provides a genuine pace option."

With Sears unavailable, New Zealand have called up 30-year-old fast bowler Jacob Duffy as his replacement. Duffy, who is yet to make his Test debut, is expected to fly to India on Wednesday to join the team ahead of the first Test. His inclusion provides the team with an experienced domestic player, though his lack of international experience in the longest format adds another layer of uncertainty to New Zealand’s preparations for the series.

The series against India is seen as a crucial test for New Zealand, with the team hoping to perform well in subcontinent conditions. Sears' injury, coupled with Williamson's uncertain availability, adds to the challenges the team will face as they look to compete against a strong Indian side.
