India's aspirations for a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final took a hit following South Africa's decisive seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the first Test in Mirpur. This win propelled South Africa to fourth place in the updated WTC 2023-25 table, complicating India's path to the final.
Before the commencement of the Test series against Bangladesh, South Africa needed to secure victories in five out of their six remaining Test matches to remain in contention for the WTC final. With a comprehensive win in their opening match against Bangladesh, they have successfully navigated their first hurdle. If they can continue this momentum and win all five of their remaining Tests, they will be in a strong position to finish in the top two. Even if they win four out of five, they could still contend for a place in the final, but that would require them to rely on the outcomes of matches involving India, Australia, and Sri Lanka.
The Proteas are favored to secure another win in the upcoming second Test against Bangladesh, after which they will host four Tests at home. In November-December, Sri Lanka will visit South Africa for two matches, followed by Pakistan, who will play a Boxing Day Test in Centurion and a New Year Test in Cape Town starting January 3. Historically, South Africa has proven to be a formidable opponent for Asian teams, making it a challenging series for Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
After their victory in the first Test against Bangladesh, South Africa's point percentage now stands at 47.62%. Sri Lanka, currently in third place with a 55.56% point percentage, has two Test matches remaining in this WTC cycle, both against South Africa. Meanwhile, reigning WTC champions Australia hold second place with a 62.50% point percentage, while India tops the table with a 69.06% point percentage.
India recently lost the first Test against New Zealand and is currently engaged in the second Test in Pune. Following this, a third Test is scheduled to take place in Mumbai before the team heads to Australia for a five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. This upcoming series is crucial, as it is likely to determine which teams will qualify for the WTC final scheduled at Lord's from June 11 to June 15, 2025.
According to cricket statistician Krishna Kumar, Australia is currently leading the race for the WTC finals with an 84% probability of qualifying, while India has a 57% chance following the outcome of the Mirpur Test between Bangladesh and South Africa. South Africa's chances stand at 46%, and Sri Lanka's hopes are slim at 10%. New Zealand, ranked fifth with a 44.44% point percentage, has only a 3% chance of making it to the final.
In light of these developments, India must win at least four of their remaining seven Tests in the WTC 2023-25 cycle. Winning the next two Tests against New Zealand is particularly crucial for them.
Australia also needs to clinch four out of their last seven Tests to secure a spot in the final. Following the series against India, they will travel to Sri Lanka for two Tests. For Sri Lanka to keep their chances alive, they must win at least three of their last four Tests. New Zealand faces an uphill battle, needing to win all five of their remaining matches to qualify.
Furthermore, India could find themselves in a precarious position if they manage to win four matches but fail to draw any of the remaining three. This scenario could result in a point percentage of 64.04%, potentially allowing Australia, South Africa, and even Sri Lanka to surpass them in the standings. Notably, if South Africa wins all their remaining matches, their point percentage could soar to 69.44%, further complicating India's prospects.
In summary, the race for the WTC final has intensified, with multiple teams vying for a top-two finish. India must navigate a challenging path ahead, while South Africa’s resurgence adds another layer of complexity to the competition. The next few months will be crucial in determining which teams make it to the WTC final, making every match a vital contest.
