The IPL 2025 mega auction is just around the corner, scheduled for November 24 and 25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. As the countdown begins, all ten franchises are meticulously planning their strategies to build strong teams for the upcoming season. One of the most crucial roles each franchise will look to strengthen is the opener position, as these players are key in setting the tone for a match from the very first ball. Openers play a pivotal role in the powerplay overs, often laying the foundation for a big total or giving their team the momentum needed to chase down a target. With explosive starts often proving to be game-changers, several star openers are expected to fetch massive bids at the IPL 2025 auction.
Here’s a closer look at five explosive openers who could be the center of attention at the upcoming auction:
1. Jos Buttler
Jos Buttler has established himself as one of the most dangerous openers in IPL history. Released by Rajasthan Royals ahead of the 2025 auction, Buttler is expected to attract fierce bidding from all franchises. With 3,582 runs from 107 matches, including 7 centuries and 19 fifties, Buttler has proven his ability to deliver match-winning performances consistently. His ability to take the game away from the opposition in the powerplay makes him a valuable asset for any team. Buttler’s aggressive approach at the top of the order ensures that he can anchor an innings or accelerate the scoring when required. His impressive form in IPL 2024, where he scored 359 runs in 11 games, showcases his continued prowess with the bat, making him one of the most sought-after players in the auction.
2. Faf du Plessis
Faf du Plessis' release by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) has made the veteran South African opener a hot property in the IPL 2025 auction. With over 4,500 runs in 145 IPL matches, including 37 half-centuries, du Plessis is known for his consistency, experience, and leadership. His exceptional performance in IPL 2024, where he amassed 438 runs in 15 matches at an explosive strike rate of 161.62, proves that he still has a lot to offer at the top of the order. Despite being 39 years old, du Plessis’ ability to find gaps and accelerate at will makes him a player that any franchise would be keen to secure for the upcoming season.
3. Phil Salt
Phil Salt’s rise in IPL 2024 was nothing short of spectacular. Playing a pivotal role in Kolkata Knight Riders' title-winning campaign, Salt scored 435 runs in 12 games at an astonishing strike rate of 182.01. His ability to hit the ball cleanly and provide quick-fire starts in the powerplay overs made him an invaluable asset for KKR. With a career strike rate of 175.5 in 21 IPL matches, Salt has established himself as one of the most destructive openers in the tournament. Given his performances last season and his ability to turn games in a matter of overs, Salt is expected to attract significant attention during the auction.
4. Quinton de Kock
Quinton de Kock, who was released by Lucknow Super Giants, remains one of the most reliable openers in IPL history. With 3,157 runs in 107 matches, including two centuries and 23 fifties, de Kock has consistently delivered at the top of the order. Although his form dipped slightly in IPL 2024, where he scored 250 runs in 11 games, his overall record speaks volumes about his ability to dominate bowling attacks. De Kock’s attacking style, coupled with his ability to build an innings when required, makes him a prime candidate for franchises looking for a solid opener who can give them quick starts. Despite the dip in form last season, his experience and proven track record will ensure that he remains in high demand at the auction.
5. Kyle Mayers
Kyle Mayers, who was picked up by Lucknow Super Giants for just Rs 50 lakh in the 2023 IPL auction, showed flashes of brilliance during his debut season. Mayers scored 379 runs in IPL 2023 at a strike rate of 144.11, including four fifties, and was crucial in providing aggressive starts for his team. Despite not featuring in IPL 2024, Mayers' impressive performances in 2023 have established him as a potential game-changer at the top of the order. His ability to take on the bowlers and keep the scoreboard ticking will make him a hot property in the 2025 auction, and teams will be keen to secure his services at a higher price this time around.
These five explosive openers—Jos Buttler, Faf du Plessis, Phil Salt, Quinton de Kock, and Kyle Mayers—are all expected to be among the most sought-after players at the IPL 2025 auction. With their ability to change the course of a match in the powerplay and deliver match-winning performances, these openers will undoubtedly be key targets for franchises looking to bolster their top-order batting. As the auction draws near, fans and franchises alike will be eagerly awaiting the bidding war that is set to unfold for these explosive talents.
