As the IPL 2025 season approaches, veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, often referred to as the "cricket scientist," has shared his insights on player retention for his former franchise, Chennai Super Kings (CSK). In a recent discussion, Ashwin emphasized the importance of strategic choices when finalizing the team’s roster for the upcoming season.
Ashwin suggests that CSK should retain their iconic former captain, MS Dhoni, as a capped player, alongside key players Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube, and Matheesha Pathirana. He argues that Dhoni's experience and leadership are invaluable assets to the team. “I will give a fresh perspective. I would retain Ruturaj, Jadeja, Dube, Pathirana, and Dhoni. I see Dhoni as a normal capped player, not as an uncapped player,” Ashwin stated on his YouTube channel.
In addition to these seasoned players, Ashwin recommends picking Sameer Rizvi as the sole uncapped player in the retention list. This suggestion is particularly notable, given the IPL governing council's recent rule change. Under this rule, any Indian player who hasn't played for the national team in the last five years can be classified as uncapped and retained for a fee of Rs 4 crore.
However, Ashwin’s recommendations have sparked some debate. Former South African performance analyst Prasanna Raman countered Ashwin’s opinion by questioning Rizvi's performance during his debut IPL season, where he scored just 51 runs in eight matches at a strike rate of 118. Raman expressed skepticism about whether Rizvi could justify his earlier price tag of Rs 8.4 crore, stating, “I don’t even know whether he would agree to play for Rs 4 crore.”
In defense of Rizvi, Ashwin highlighted the young cricketer's remarkable performances in the UPT20 League. He noted that Rizvi had an impressive season, finishing as the second-highest run-scorer with 468 runs in 13 matches, averaging 42.55 and boasting a strike rate of 152.44. Ashwin asserted, “He has been putting on a show every day. There’s a huge upside with him. He will fall into the same bracket as other upcoming stars.”
Ashwin's advocacy for Rizvi underscores his belief in the player's potential and talent, suggesting that the young cricketer could become one of the brightest stars in Indian cricket. With the IPL retaining its status as one of the most competitive cricket leagues globally, CSK's strategic choices regarding player retention will be crucial for the franchise’s success in the upcoming season.
As the discussions around player retention continue, the choices made by CSK will not only shape the team dynamics but also set the stage for the franchise's aspirations in IPL 2025. The combination of seasoned players like Dhoni and promising talents like Rizvi could potentially create a powerful blend that drives CSK towards another successful campaign.
