As the deadline for submitting retention lists for IPL 2025 draws near, the Mumbai Indians, five-time champions of the league, have almost finalized their strategy. The franchise is set to retain four crucial players, ensuring they remain competitive in the upcoming season.
The players likely to be retained include captain Hardik Pandya, former captain Rohit Sharma, T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav, and Test team vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah. Each of these players brings significant experience and talent to the team, making them invaluable assets as the Mumbai Indians aim to bounce back from a challenging previous season.
In addition to retaining these core players, the Mumbai Indians are keen on reacquiring wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan during the IPL 2025 mega auction, expected to take place in November. Kishan has been a standout performer for the team and is viewed as integral to their batting lineup. The franchise also plans to exercise the Right To Match (RTM) option for Australian batter Tim David, who has proven to be a game-changer with his explosive batting.
The management is also considering bringing back young talents like Tilak Varma and Nehal Wadhera, who showed promise in previous seasons. Retaining and strengthening the squad with both experienced and emerging players is crucial for the Mumbai Indians as they aim to reclaim their position at the top of the IPL standings.
Last year was a disappointing campaign for the Mumbai Indians, as they finished at the bottom of the table under Hardik Pandya's captaincy. The team faced criticism, particularly during home matches, as fans expressed their dissatisfaction with the leadership transition from Rohit Sharma to Pandya. Furthermore, there were reports of a rift within the camp, which the franchise aims to address with their retention strategy.
In response to last season’s struggles, the Mumbai Indians have re-appointed Mahela Jayawardene as head coach, hoping his experience will steer the team back to success. Additionally, they have brought in former bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, aiming to strengthen their bowling attack and overall performance.
Under the latest guidelines from the ICC governing council, franchises can retain up to six players, with a maximum of five capped and two uncapped players. The retention values are set at Rs 18 crore for the first player, Rs 14 crore for the second, Rs 11 crore for the third, and Rs 18 crore and Rs 14 crore for the fifth and sixth players, respectively. An uncapped player can be retained for Rs 4 crore. Teams can retain all six players before the auction or opt to use the RTM option later to fill their rosters.
With these strategic moves, the Mumbai Indians are looking to re-establish their dominance in the IPL and build a strong squad that can compete effectively in the upcoming season. The retention decisions will be crucial in shaping the team's future as they prepare for the mega auction and the challenges that lie ahead.
