Among the significant changes is the reinstatement of a rule that was previously scrapped in 2021, introducing the uncapped player category for Indian cricketers who have not represented the national team in the last five years.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has finalized the eagerly anticipated retention rules for the IPL 2025 season, allowing franchises to retain up to six players. Among the significant changes is the reinstatement of a rule that was previously scrapped in 2021, introducing the uncapped player category for Indian cricketers who have not represented the national team in the last five years.

Under the new regulations, the IPL Governing Council has announced that Indian players with a gap of over five years since their last international appearance will be classified as uncapped. This rule stipulates that franchises may retain a maximum of two such players at a price of ₹4 crore each. Specifically, a capped Indian player will become uncapped if they have not played in the starting XI of any international format (Test, ODI, or T20I) or do not hold a central contract with the BCCI during the five calendar years leading up to the IPL season.

One of the most notable players who fits this criterion is former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who last donned the national jersey during the 2019 ODI World Cup. Dhoni's situation highlights the potential for franchises to retain other notable players who have been absent from international cricket. As teams prepare for the IPL 2025 mega auction scheduled later this year, several Indian cricketers are poised to enter the uncapped category.

Among these players is the 31-year-old Chandigarh pacer who has two T20I caps and last played for India in 2015 during the tour of Zimbabwe. Despite not being selected again for the national team, he had a commendable IPL season, taking 13 wickets in 10 matches with an economy rate of 8.18.

Another potential uncapped retention is a 36-year-old Haryana fast bowler who has represented India in 4 T20Is and 26 ODIs, with his last appearance in a 2015 series against South Africa. He made a successful return to the IPL thanks to the impact player rule in 2023 and was the leading wicket-taker for the Gujarat Titans in 2024.

Additionally, a 33-year-old all-rounder from Tamil Nadu, who also last played for India in the 2019 ODI World Cup, has seen his role diminish in the IPL, playing only seven matches recently for the Gujarat Titans. Similarly, a veteran leg-spinner, who last represented India in 2017, could also find himself in the uncapped category, despite sporadic appearances in the IPL over the years.

There is also a 34-year-old all-rounder from Himachal Pradesh, who has not played for the national team since 2016 but has returned to the IPL with limited opportunities. A younger leg-spinner from Punjab, who made just one T20I appearance in 2019, has also shown promise in the IPL, having taken 20 wickets in the last two seasons.

Finally, a 36-year-old leg-spinner who last played for India in 2014 has been part of the IPL, although not consistently. He managed to claim seven wickets in nine matches for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2024.

While these players are eligible for retention under the uncapped category, it is unlikely that they will be retained at the ₹4 crore price point like MS Dhoni for the Chennai Super Kings. Instead, they are expected to enter the auction, where teams may opt to buy them back based on their performances and the team's needs.

This new retention rule not only adds an intriguing dimension to the upcoming IPL mega auction but also reflects the evolving landscape of Indian cricket as franchises adapt their strategies to retain and acquire talent. As the IPL continues to grow in stature and popularity, these changes are likely to enhance the competitiveness of the tournament while giving deserving players a chance to continue their careers.

Despite not being selected again for the national team, he had a commendable IPL season, taking 13 wickets in 10 matches with an economy rate of 8.18.
