Under the guidelines set by the IPL governing council, teams are allowed to retain up to six players—comprising a maximum of five capped players and two uncapped players.

As the October 31 deadline approaches for IPL franchises to submit their retention lists, all eyes are on the popular Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). The team, which has consistently featured star-studded lineups over the years, has yet to secure an IPL title in its 17-year history. With the pressure mounting to build a winning squad for the next IPL cycle, RCB's management is tasked with making crucial decisions about which players to retain.

Under the guidelines set by the IPL governing council, teams are allowed to retain up to six players—comprising a maximum of five capped players and two uncapped players. Additionally, franchises have the option to utilize the Right To Match (RTM) card during the auction if they choose not to retain all six players.

Retaining Virat Kohli is considered a no-brainer for RCB, given his status as one of the greatest batsmen in cricket history. The franchise is likely to also consider retaining other key players, including Yash Dayal, Faf du Plessis, Mohammed Siraj, and Rajat Patidar, who have all made significant contributions to the team's performances in recent seasons.

However, the franchise is faced with the difficult reality of losing two impactful players. First on the list is Australian all-rounder Cameron Green, who has opted to undergo back surgery, ruling him out for at least six months. His absence poses a significant challenge for RCB, as they must evaluate whether to retain him despite knowing he won't be available for the immediate future.

Additionally, RCB will need to fill the gap left by the experienced wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik, who announced his retirement from Indian cricket following the 2024 season. While Karthik has indicated plans to continue playing in the SA20 League, his departure will create a void in RCB's lineup, particularly in terms of leadership and experience.

Renowned commentator Harsha Bhogle recently discussed these issues on his YouTube channel, emphasizing the challenges RCB faces in their decision-making process. He remarked, "Finding a replacement for Dinesh Karthik would be a huge task for RCB. I don't think Cameron Green is going to be able to come back (because of injury). RCB has a tough call to make: should we still keep him even though we know we can't play him on the assumption that we will have him for the next two years?"

Bhogle further noted that Green's inability to bowl diminishes his overall value to the team, stating, "If he is not bowling, he is half the value he brings." This analysis underscores the strategic dilemma RCB faces in retaining players who may not contribute significantly due to injury.

As RCB navigates these complex decisions, the franchise remains focused on its long-standing ambition to capture the elusive IPL title. The upcoming mega auction presents a crucial opportunity for the team to redefine its roster and build a squad capable of achieving that goal. The retention list will be the first step in this journey, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead. With high expectations from fans and stakeholders, RCB's decisions in the coming days will be pivotal for its quest for success in IPL 2025.
