Jasprit Bumrah has ascended to the pinnacle of the ICC men's Test bowling rankings, becoming the new world No. 1 bowler after his stellar performances in the recent Test series against Bangladesh. In the latest rankings released on October 1, Bumrah edged past his teammate Ravichandran Ashwin, accumulating 870 points compared to Ashwin’s 869. This marks a significant achievement for Bumrah, who has demonstrated remarkable consistency and skill in the longest format of the game.
Bumrah's rise to the top came on the back of a heroic display during the Test series against Bangladesh, where he played a crucial role in India's 7-wicket victory in Kanpur. In that match, Bumrah showcased his exceptional bowling prowess, taking six wickets, which significantly contributed to his team's success. Throughout the two-match series, both Bumrah and Ashwin were instrumental in dismantling the Bangladeshi batting lineup, each finishing with 11 wickets.
This is the second occasion Bumrah has reclaimed the top position in the ICC Test rankings, a place he has shared with Ashwin throughout the year. Their partnership has been a vital component of India's dominance in the Test arena, with Bumrah's fast bowling complementing Ashwin's spin to create a formidable bowling attack. Ashwin, who has been in phenomenal form himself, expressed good sportsmanship despite slipping to second place, posting on Instagram, "You belong here," highlighting the camaraderie and mutual respect between the two elite bowlers.
The latest ICC rankings saw few changes at the top, but one notable ascent was that of Sri Lanka's Prabath Jayasuriya, who climbed to a career-high seventh place, showcasing his emerging talent in the international scene. For India, Ravindra Jadeja also maintained his position in the top ten, holding firm in sixth place after impressive performances in the Bangladesh series. Jadeja achieved a significant milestone during the second Test, becoming only the third left-arm spinner to surpass 300 Test wickets, further solidifying his status as a key player in the Indian bowling lineup.
Bumrah’s achievement not only reflects his personal excellence but also underscores the strength of India's bowling attack, which has been crucial in their recent successes in Test cricket. As the cricketing world continues to watch closely, Bumrah's performance will be pivotal in maintaining India's competitive edge in upcoming series and tournaments. With the ICC World Test Championship on the horizon, the focus will be on how Bumrah, Ashwin, and Jadeja continue to perform as they aim to lead India to further glory in international cricket.
