The young prodigy’s explosive batting and match-winning contributions have drawn the attention of former Pakistan pacer Junaid Khan, who raised questions about his age, sparking a heated debate in the cricketing world.

India’s rising cricket star, 13-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, has found himself at the center of an age-fraud controversy following his spectacular performances in the recently concluded U-19 Asia Cup. The young prodigy’s explosive batting and match-winning contributions have drawn the attention of former Pakistan pacer Junaid Khan, who raised questions about his age, sparking a heated debate in the cricketing world.

Junaid Khan posted a video on social media featuring Suryavanshi’s remarkable semifinal performance against Sri Lanka, where the teenager smashed five sixes and five boundaries to score 67 runs off just 36 balls. Khan’s post questioned the authenticity of Suryavanshi's age, asking, "Can a 13-year-old kid really hit such a long six?" This comment has since gone viral, fueling the controversy and leading to widespread speculation about whether Suryavanshi is truly as young as his official records suggest.

In the U-19 Asia Cup semifinal, Suryavanshi’s knock played a pivotal role in India’s seven-wicket victory over Sri Lanka, earning him the Player of the Match award. His performance was part of a standout campaign where he scored 176 runs across five matches, making him one of the top run-scorers of the tournament. Notably, he also scored two half-centuries, including an explosive 76* against the UAE.

However, despite his impressive performances, Suryavanshi struggled in the final, managing only 9 runs as India lost to Bangladesh by 59 runs. This loss, coupled with the ongoing age-fraud allegations, has put a cloud over his otherwise exceptional tournament.

Suryavanshi’s father, Sanjiv, has strongly defended his son’s age, dismissing the claims as baseless. He pointed to a BCCI-certified bone test conducted five years ago, when Suryavanshi was just 8 and a half years old, which confirmed his son’s age. Speaking to PTI, Sanjiv said, “When he was 8 and a half years old, he underwent a BCCI bone test. He has already played for India U-19. We don't fear anyone, and he can again undergo an age test if required.”

The controversy comes just weeks after Suryavanshi made history at the IPL 2025 Auction. At just 13 years old, he became the youngest player ever to be sold at the IPL auction, securing a deal with Rajasthan Royals for INR 1.1 crore. The deal also placed him under the mentorship of legendary cricketer Rahul Dravid, who recently rejoined Rajasthan Royals as their head coach.

Despite the age-related questions, Suryavanshi remains focused on his cricketing journey. He is preparing for his List A debut for Bihar in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he will have the chance to showcase his skills on a national stage. Additionally, he will join a star-studded Rajasthan Royals lineup for IPL 2025, featuring players like Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Jofra Archer.

While the allegations have stirred controversy, Suryavanshi’s talent and determination continue to shine through. His performances in the U-19 Asia Cup and his subsequent success in the IPL auction highlight his potential as one of India’s future cricketing stars. As the debate over his age continues to unfold, Suryavanshi remains focused on his cricketing goals, eager to prove his worth both on and off the field.

In the U-19 Asia Cup semifinal, Suryavanshi’s knock played a pivotal role in India’s seven-wicket victory over Sri Lanka, earning him the Player of the Match award.
