Kagiso Rabada etched his name in the annals of cricket history on October 21, 2024, by becoming the sixth South African bowler to reach the prestigious milestone of 300 Test wickets during the first Test against Bangladesh at the Sher-E-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka. Rabada achieved this remarkable feat by cleaning up senior Bangladeshi batter Mushfiqur Rahim for just 11 runs in the first session of day one.

This accomplishment not only underscores Rabada's skill and dedication as a fast bowler but also places him alongside some of South Africa's greatest cricketing legends. He joins an elite group that includes the likes of Dale Steyn, Shaun Pollock, Allan Donald, Makhaya Ntini, and Morne Morkel—each of whom has made significant contributions to South African cricket over the years.

With Rahim’s dismissal, Rabada became the third fastest South African to reach the 300-wicket mark, achieving it in only 65 matches. The list of the fastest South Africans to reach this milestone is led by Dale Steyn, who achieved the feat in 61 matches, followed closely by Allan Donald at 63 matches. Rabada's achievement also highlights his efficiency; he is the fastest bowler in terms of deliveries bowled to reach 300 wickets, accomplishing the milestone in just 11,817 balls. This surpasses the records set by other fast-bowling greats, including Waqar Younis, Steyn, Donald, and Malcolm Marshall.

  • Dale Steyn - 439 wickets in 93 matches
  • Shaun Pollock - 421 wickets in 108 matches

In the same match against Bangladesh, Rabada's exceptional bowling performance didn't stop with Rahim. He later dismissed Litton Das, who edged a delivery to Tristan Stubbs at gully, further asserting his dominance in the game. While Rabada was impactful, the standout bowler for South Africa on the day was Wiaan Mulder, who tore through the Bangladeshi top order, dismissing captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, opener Shadman Islam, and number three Mominul Haque in a devastating spell.

The innings concluded with Keshav Maharaj adding to the woes of the Bangladeshi batting line-up by trapping Mehidy Hasan Miraz in front of the stumps just before lunch, leaving the hosts reeling at 60 for 6 after just 26.1 overs.

Rabada's 300 wickets not only demonstrate his incredible talent and hard work but also reflect his vital role in the South African bowling attack over the years. As he continues to add to his wicket tally, cricket enthusiasts will undoubtedly keep a close eye on his performance and contributions to the game, hoping to see him reach even greater heights in the future.
