KL Rahul is likely to miss the upcoming white-ball series against England, as the wicketkeeper-batter has reportedly requested an extended break following India’s recent lengthy tour of Australia, where they competed in the high-profile Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Rahul, who has been an integral part of India’s limited-overs setup, has decided to take some time off from the game, choosing to rest before the crucial Champions Trophy 2025.
In addition to opting out of the England series, Rahul has also opted out of participating in the Vijay Hazare Trophy knockout rounds, which further indicates his desire for a break after a grueling schedule. His decision to rest comes after a challenging but productive Test series in Australia, where he was one of the few Indian batters to score consistently. Rahul finished as the third-highest run-scorer for India, accumulating 276 runs in 10 innings at an average of 30.66. Despite the team’s overall struggles in Australia, Rahul’s contribution with the bat was one of the few positives.
The white-ball series against England, which will begin in Kolkata on January 22, includes five T20Is and three ODIs. While these games are significant in their own right, especially as they serve as preparation for the 2025 Champions Trophy, Rahul has opted to rest for this series. The Champions Trophy is set to be played in a hybrid model across Pakistan and the UAE starting February 19, 2025. According to a BCCI source, Rahul will be available for selection for the prestigious tournament, with the board accommodating his request for a break before the major event.
Rahul, who has been a mainstay in India’s white-ball setup, especially in the 50-over format, is facing competition for the wicketkeeper-batter position in the Champions Trophy squad. Alongside him, Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson are in contention for a spot in the playing XI, but despite this competition, Rahul has reportedly been assured of a place in the squad. This assurance comes as a sign of confidence from the selectors, who recognize Rahul’s value and experience in high-pressure tournaments.
With the 2025 Champions Trophy fast approaching, Rahul’s availability for selection will be critical as India seeks to field their best possible squad for the prestigious tournament. His extended break is expected to help him recharge and focus on getting back to peak form, ready to contribute to India's success in the Champions Trophy.
