Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj has shared his thoughts on leading the bowling attack in the absence of senior fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah during the ongoing Test series against England. Speaking to reporters after his recent performances, Siraj reflected on how the dynamics of India’s pace unit have shifted and how he has embraced the responsibility of being the frontline seamer.
Siraj acknowledged that he has been in good rhythm and delivering with consistency, but he also pointed out that the team misses Bumrah’s experience and ability to deliver crucial breakthroughs under pressure. Bumrah, who has often led India’s attack across formats, was rested for portions of the England series as part of workload management. His absence gave Siraj and other bowlers the opportunity to step up in more demanding roles.
Siraj stated that one of the biggest changes has been the shift in responsibility. Without Bumrah at the other end, Siraj has often been tasked with opening the bowling and setting the tone in the early overs. He also noted that opposition teams tend to play differently when Bumrah is not in the lineup, often looking more comfortable at the crease. This, he said, requires bowlers like him to remain extra focused and aggressive.
He also highlighted the importance of communication within the bowling group. With a relatively young pace unit, Siraj explained that he has taken it upon himself to guide less experienced bowlers, sharing field strategies and helping them stay calm in high-pressure situations. He credited the coaching staff and captain for trusting him with this expanded role.
Siraj's recent performances in the series have shown maturity. He has been effective with both the new and old ball, maintaining good line and length while generating movement off the pitch. His ability to reverse swing the ball and bowl in partnerships has helped India maintain pressure even on batting-friendly pitches.
The pacer also spoke about his own evolution as a cricketer over the past few years. From being a reserve bowler on overseas tours to now leading the attack in crucial matches, Siraj said the journey has taught him resilience and patience. He added that the experience of playing under senior bowlers like Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, and Bumrah has prepared him for these moments.
While India has often relied heavily on spin-friendly conditions in home Tests, the emergence of bowlers like Siraj offers depth and flexibility. His presence gives India the ability to challenge opponents with pace as well as spin, especially when conditions are less helpful for the slower bowlers.
As the series continues, Siraj remains focused on executing his plans and helping India maintain control. With Bumrah expected to return later in the series, fans can look forward to a strong bowling combination that blends experience with youthful energy.
