The retirement of Shikhar Dhawan from international and domestic cricket has prompted heartfelt tributes from several prominent figures in Indian cricket. Gautam Gambhir, Shreyas Iyer, and Hardik Pandya have all weighed in on Dhawan's career, emphasizing his substantial impact on the sport and lamenting that he did not always receive the full recognition he deserved.
Gautam Gambhir, a former Indian opener and a respected voice in cricket commentary, expressed his admiration for Dhawan's career. Gambhir noted that Dhawan's crucial performances in key matches often went underappreciated. “Shikhar Dhawan was a vital player for India, particularly in limited-overs cricket. His ability to score runs when the team needed them the most was remarkable. Despite his significant contributions, he didn’t always get the recognition he deserved. His career has been one of great consistency and match-winning innings,” Gambhir commented.
Shreyas Iyer, a contemporary of Dhawan and an active member of the Indian squad, shared his thoughts on Dhawan's influence and his role as a mentor. Iyer acknowledged Dhawan's contributions and his ability to perform in crucial situations. “Shikhar bhai’s retirement is a huge moment for Indian cricket. His presence in the team was always reassuring. He had a unique ability to deliver in high-pressure situations and his mentorship to younger players was invaluable. It’s unfortunate that he didn’t receive as much acclaim as he deserved, given his immense impact on the game,” Iyer remarked.
Hardik Pandya, another key player in the Indian cricket team, echoed similar sentiments. Pandya reflected on Dhawan's role as a leader and his consistent performances. “Shikhar Dhawan’s career is a testament to his skill and dedication. He was a phenomenal player who consistently delivered for the team. His leadership and guidance were crucial for many of us. It’s disappointing that his achievements weren’t always highlighted as they should have been. He was an integral part of Indian cricket and his retirement marks the end of an era,” Pandya said.
Shikhar Dhawan’s retirement marks the conclusion of a distinguished career characterized by his aggressive batting and crucial innings, particularly in limited-overs formats. His ability to perform in high-stakes games and his consistent run-scoring were hallmarks of his career. Despite his significant contributions, there has been a general sentiment among fans and players alike that Dhawan’s achievements were sometimes overshadowed.
As Dhawan steps away from professional cricket, the reflections from Gambhir, Iyer, and Pandya serve as a reminder of his impact on the sport and the respect he commanded among his peers. His retirement is a significant moment in Indian cricket, signaling the end of a career that, while immensely successful, may not have always received the full recognition it warranted.
