Rajasthan Royals' (RR) batsman Nitish Rana has publicly supported the franchise's decision to appoint Riyan Parag as the stand-in captain during regular skipper Sanju Samson's absence in the initial matches of IPL 2025.
Sanju Samson, recovering from an injury, was utilized as an impact player in the first three games, necessitating a temporary captain. The team management entrusted Riyan Parag with the leadership role, a move that sparked discussions given Rana's prior captaincy experience with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2023
Addressing the media ahead of RR's match against Delhi Capitals, Rana clarified his stance:
"When I was made captain of KKR, I had been with the team for 6-7 years. That helped a lot because I understood the team culture and environment. Now, with RR, I think Riyan knows the team's setup better than me. And I think it was absolutely the right decision by the management."
Rana emphasized that team familiarity plays a crucial role in leadership effectiveness. While he would have accepted the captaincy if offered, he believes the management's choice was appropriate given Parag's tenure with RR since 2019.
"If they had asked me, of course, I would've happily accepted the captaincy. But what matters most is what's right for the team. And I think they made the correct call," Rana added.
Under Parag's captaincy, RR secured a notable victory against Chennai Super Kings, although they faced defeats in the other two matches. Rana praised Parag's calm demeanor and highlighted a pivotal moment in the match against CSK:"
Riyan's catch was the important turning point of the game," he remarked, referring to Parag's one-handed catch that dismissed Shivam Dube.
Rana also addressed his own batting position and performance, acknowledging limited opportunities due to strategic decisions favoring left-right combinations. He expressed his commitment to fulfilling the team's requirements:
"Things are very different on the ground. Sometimes the match situation demands something else. Often, a left-right combination becomes very important in a format like the IPL. In a couple of matches, I didn't get much chance to bat."
As RR continues its IPL 2025 campaign, the team's internal cohesion and adaptability remain evident. With key players like Rana and Parag demonstrating professionalism and team-first attitudes, RR aims to build on its performances in the upcoming matches.
