Harry Brook continued his remarkable form in Test cricket by smashing his eighth century, marking another milestone in his career, during Day 1 of the second Test against New Zealand at the Basin Reserve in Wellington on December 6, 2024. Brook's exceptional knock of 123 runs off just 115 balls was pivotal in helping England recover from a precarious position of 43/4. His century, which included 11 boundaries and five sixes, turned the tide for England as they posted a total of 280 all out in 54.4 overs.

This century also brought Brook into an elite group of players who have surpassed 1000 Test runs in the calendar year 2024. With 1044 runs in 17 innings, Brook became the fourth player to achieve this remarkable feat, joining the ranks of England's Joe Root (1364 runs in 28 innings), India's Yashasvi Jaiswal (1280 runs in 24 innings), and Ben Duckett (1042 runs in 29 innings).

Notably, Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis, who has had an outstanding year with five centuries, is also within reach of joining this 1000-run club for the year. His stellar performances in 2024 have seen him score 966 runs in 14 innings, and he is one of the players to watch out for as the year progresses.

Harry Brook’s consistency in Test cricket has been extraordinary, with an average of 61.80 and a strike rate of 88.53 after 23 Tests. He has scored 2225 runs, including eight centuries and nine fifties. His highest score remains an impressive 317. What stands out about Brook is his ability to shine away from home, with 1464 runs in 10 Tests, averaging 91.50, and a remarkable strike rate of 96.50. Seven of his eight centuries have come in overseas conditions, with a best score of 317, showcasing his adaptability to different pitches and conditions.

Brook’s record in New Zealand is particularly impressive, having scored 623 runs in just four Tests at an average of 103.83. This includes three centuries and two fifties in just six innings, with a best score of 186. His performances in the country have been nothing short of extraordinary, underlining his comfort with the conditions in New Zealand.

In this match, England’s innings got off to a rocky start after being put to bat first by New Zealand’s captain Tom Latham. The English were reduced to 43/4 early on, with their top order falling quickly. However, Brook’s counter-attacking century turned the momentum, and alongside Ollie Pope, who also played a crucial knock, the pair put together a 174-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Pope’s half-century helped stabilise England's innings and propelled them to a competitive total.

New Zealand's bowlers put up a strong fight, with Nathan Smith being the pick of the bowlers, taking 4 wickets for 86 runs. Will O’Rourke also impressed with 3 wickets for 49, while Matt Henry chipped in with two wickets. Despite their efforts, England’s recovery led by Brook was the key to their eventual total.

In response, New Zealand’s batting was not able to find its rhythm, and they were reduced to 86/5 by stumps on Day 1. England’s bowlers will be looking to press home their advantage and extend their lead in the series. With the first Test already in their favour, England will be looking to take a 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Brook’s outstanding performance not only highlighted his growing stature in world cricket but also added another memorable chapter to his already impressive career. His ability to perform under pressure, particularly away from home, continues to make him one of England's brightest stars in the current Test landscape.
