In a remarkable display of skill and strategy, Puneri Paltan delivered a commanding 56-18 victory over Bengaluru Bulls in Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) Season 11 on December 13, 2024. The match, held at the Badminton Hall in Balewadi Sports Complex, Pune, was a turning point for the Paltan as they moved up to seventh place in the points table, keeping their playoff hopes very much alive.
After the huge victory, Puneri Paltan's Assistant Coach, Ajay Thakur, took the time to delve into the team's strategy that led to this massive 38-point win. Thakur shared key insights into how the team approached the match, emphasizing that it was not just about raw skill but also about mindset, team morale, and focusing on specific areas where improvement was needed.
One of the critical aspects Thakur pointed out was the team's focus on improving their performance during the final minutes of the match. "We've been working on those small details where we used to give up in the last four or five minutes," Thakur explained. This dedication to refining their approach during critical moments paid off, as Puneri Paltan managed to maintain their dominance throughout the game, never allowing Bengaluru Bulls to mount a serious comeback.
Thakur also stressed the importance of team morale and motivation. The coach passionately spoke about encouraging his players to give their absolute best for the fans, irrespective of the match's status. “We need to play for our fans, giving our absolute best,” Thakur said. This emotional drive seemed to resonate with the team, pushing them to a comprehensive victory.
Another important tactical decision Thakur highlighted was the focus on defensive cohesion. He advised the team's leaders, including key raiders and defenders, to play closely with the defense and to avoid unnecessary risks. “Don’t make hasty decisions,” Thakur cautioned, underscoring the importance of maintaining a calm and measured approach, particularly in high-pressure situations.
Interestingly, Thakur's strategy also included a pragmatic concern for player safety. While the team’s performance was impressive, the assistant coach was focused on ensuring that they did not risk injuries, especially given the tight schedule with matches coming up quickly. “I didn’t want to win by a huge margin. My focus was on ensuring we win while keeping our players safe,” Thakur shared. This emphasis on player well-being was crucial, as it ensured that the team maintained their energy and readiness for upcoming challenges.
The team’s disciplined approach to the game, strong defensive play, and unyielding commitment to winning for the fans resulted in a victory that not only bolstered their playoff prospects but also showcased their tactical maturity and focus. With this significant win, Puneri Paltan remains firmly in the hunt for a spot in the PKL 2024 playoffs, and Thakur’s insights reveal a clear blueprint for the team’s future success.
