The tournament, which begins on December 21 in Ahmedabad, will see Mumbai take to the field without one of their most promising batters, raising questions about Shaw’s future and his struggle to regain his earlier form.

Prithvi Shaw, once regarded as one of the brightest talents in Indian cricket, is facing a critical juncture in his career. The 25-year-old opener, who made an explosive debut for India with a stunning Test century, has been excluded from Mumbai’s squad for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25. The tournament, which begins on December 21 in Ahmedabad, will see Mumbai take to the field without one of their most promising batters, raising questions about Shaw’s future and his struggle to regain his earlier form.

This decision comes after a difficult 2023-24 season for Shaw, during which he faced a series of setbacks. His problems started during the Ranji Trophy, where Shaw was dropped midway through the tournament due to a combination of fitness issues and disciplinary concerns. Despite this, Shaw made a comeback during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) but failed to make a significant impact. While Mumbai went on to win the T20 competition, Shaw's contributions were modest, marked by a few promising starts that never materialized into match-winning innings.

In a further blow to Shaw’s career, he went unsold during the November IPL auction, a stark contrast to his earlier years when he was one of the most sought-after young talents in the league. This development highlighted how far Shaw’s stock had fallen, and many cricket fans and pundits began questioning the reasons behind his inability to regain his form.

Shaw’s exclusion from the Vijay Hazare Trophy squad marks a tough moment in his career. Despite his impressive List A numbers—he has accumulated 3,399 runs in 65 innings at an average of 55.7 and a strike rate of 126 in the tournament—Shaw’s omission underscores the disconnect between his potential and his recent performances. Shaw, clearly frustrated by his exclusion, took to Instagram to share his feelings. In an emotional post, he wrote: "Tell me God, what more do I have to see? If 65 innings, 3399 runs at an average of 55.7 with a strike rate of 126 (in Vijay Hazare), I'm not good enough. But I will keep my faith in you and, hopefully, people still believe in me, because I will come back for sure. Om Sai Ram."

Shaw’s heartfelt message reflected the emotional toll of his ongoing struggles, with the batter expressing confusion over his exclusion despite a solid track record. His post also highlighted his determination to bounce back and regain the faith of both his supporters and selectors.

Shreyas Iyer, the captain of Mumbai for the Vijay Hazare Trophy, has been one of the few figures to publicly support Shaw. Iyer, who has spoken about Shaw’s immense potential in the past, once said, "The sky is the limit for him if he works on his work ethics." Similarly, senior Mumbai cricketer Ajinkya Rahane has also urged Shaw to focus on consistency and discipline, believing in the youngster’s abilities. However, it seems Shaw's ongoing struggles with form and fitness have overshadowed his potential, leading to his exclusion from the squad.

Mumbai’s squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy will feature a blend of experienced players and emerging talents. Shreyas Iyer will lead the team, which also includes stalwarts like Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, and pacer Shardul Thakur. Interestingly, Shaw's exclusion also sees the omission of spinner Shams Mulani, who has been a regular fixture in Mumbai’s lineup.

Mumbai will begin their Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign against Karnataka on December 23. While the squad will miss Shaw's talent, the team will aim to put together a strong performance and continue their dominance in domestic cricket.

Mumbai Squad for Vijay Hazare Trophy:
Shreyas Iyer (Captain), Ayush Mhatre, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Jay Bista, Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, Suryansh Shedge, Siddhesh Lad, Hardik Tamore, Prasad Pawar (WK), Atharva Ankolekar, Tanush Kotian, Shardul Thakur, Royston Dias, Juned Khan, Harsh Tanna, Vinayak Bhor.

Despite his exclusion from the squad, Shaw’s passion for the game remains evident, as he vowed to fight back and make a comeback. With his undeniable talent, many still believe that Shaw has the ability to turn things around if he can address his recent challenges and focus on consistency, fitness, and discipline. Only time will tell whether Shaw can reclaim his place in the Indian team and live up to the immense potential he once showed.
