The long-running debate over Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli has once again gained attention after former India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin shared his views on the comparison between the two legendary batters.
Ashwin has argued that Tendulkar should still be considered ahead of Kohli when the careers of the two players are discussed. However, his comments were not based simply on statistics. Instead, Ashwin focused on the different eras in which the two cricketers played and the conditions they faced during their careers.

Kohli recently registered his 86th international century against the West Indies, further reducing the numerical gap between the two Indian batting stars. He had already moved past Tendulkar's record for the most ODI centuries during the 2023 World Cup.
Despite Kohli's record-breaking career, Ashwin said Tendulkar remains ahead in his personal assessment. He gave two main reasons for his view. The first is his admiration for Tendulkar, while the second concerns the circumstances and challenges surrounding Tendulkar's career.
Tendulkar played international cricket for 24 years and became one of the most influential figures in Indian cricket. His career included a period when India's batting expectations were heavily associated with his performances. Ashwin referred to Tendulkar as a major source of hope for Indian cricket during his playing days.
At the same time, Ashwin acknowledged that Kohli's achievements are extraordinary. Kohli has established himself as one of India's leading batters across formats and has produced a remarkable number of international centuries. His consistency, fitness and ability to score heavily have made him a central figure in modern Indian cricket.
Ashwin also suggested that there could eventually be a point at which the comparison becomes different. If Kohli manages to reach Tendulkar's landmark of 100 international centuries, Ashwin said he would be prepared to consider the two players to be on the same level.
This qualification highlights Ashwin's respect for Kohli even while he currently gives Tendulkar the edge.
