Rashid Khan’s spectacular six-wicket performance on Day 4 of the second Test has put Afghanistan just two wickets away from securing a historic series victory over Zimbabwe in Bulawayo. At the close of play, Zimbabwe was 205/8, requiring 73 more runs to win, with captain Craig Ervine still at the crease, unbeaten on 53. Afghanistan's bowlers, particularly Rashid Khan, have been relentless, and Zimbabwe’s path to victory looks increasingly difficult.
The day started with Afghanistan in a commanding position after resuming their second innings on 363. The highlight of their innings was debutant Ismat Alam’s brilliant century. Alam, who had earlier scored a maiden Test fifty, brought up his first Test hundred, finishing with a career-best score of 101. This made Alam the highest scorer on debut for Afghanistan, an achievement that helped extend the team's total. Alongside Alam, Rashid Khan played a key role in bolstering Afghanistan’s score. However, Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani put the brakes on Afghanistan’s progress, taking 6 wickets for 95 runs, as Afghanistan was all out for 277, setting Zimbabwe a target of 278.
Zimbabwe’s chase got off to a positive start with Ben Curran’s attacking stroke play, including a couple of late cuts that brought early boundaries. But the turning point came with the introduction of spin. Zia-ur-Rehman struck first by dismissing Joylord Gumbie, who got out to a reverse sweep gone wrong. Rashid Khan then took charge, starting with the wicket of Curran, who was dismissed by a delivery spinning in from the rough.
Rashid’s relentless spin attack tore through Zimbabwe’s middle order, and he soon claimed his 400th international wicket when he removed Dion Myers with a wrong’un. Zimbabwe's resistance, led by Sikandar Raza and Ervine, briefly revived their chances with a 58-run partnership. However, the partnership was broken when Raza's drive off a wide delivery was caught at cover, giving Rashid another wicket. Rashid continued to dominate, dismissing Sean Williams and Brian Bennett with sharp turners, completing his fifth Test five-wicket haul in the process.
As Zimbabwe’s batting line-up crumbled, Zia-ur-Rehman joined the action, trapping Newman Nyamhuri lbw. From a promising 150/4, Zimbabwe found themselves in dire straits at 174/8. Afghanistan’s bowlers maintained tight control, putting immense pressure on Zimbabwe’s remaining batsmen.
With only two wickets left and 73 runs to chase, Zimbabwe now faces an uphill battle to avoid defeat and salvage a draw. Rashid Khan’s exceptional bowling performance has not only put Afghanistan on the cusp of a series victory but has also highlighted his status as one of the premier spinners in world cricket. For Zimbabwe, the task ahead looks daunting, with their middle order having collapsed under pressure, leaving them with little room for error. Afghanistan will be looking to finish off the job on Day 5 and clinch their first-ever series victory on Zimbabwean soil.
