Ravindra Jadeja has created a buzz among Indian cricket fans after making a short and playful comment on the BCCI’s social media post about the vacant position on the men’s selection committee.
The India all rounder responded to the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s post inviting applications for one position on the senior men’s selection committee. Jadeja asked, “What’s the procedure?” His brief response immediately attracted attention because it came shortly after Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as chairman of the selection committee came to an end.
Jadeja is not particularly active on X, making the interaction more noticeable. His comment was widely viewed as a cheeky or humorous response rather than a formal indication that he wants to become a selector. There has been no official statement from Jadeja or the BCCI suggesting that the all rounder is preparing to apply for the vacant position.
The BCCI had announced the opening after Agarkar’s tenure ended. Agarkar, a former India all rounder and fast bowler, took charge as chairman of the senior men’s selection committee in July 2023. His tenure officially concluded on October 4, 2026.
Agarkar did not seek an extension, according to reports, and the BCCI subsequently began the process of finding his replacement. The board invited applications for one position on the men’s selection committee, beginning the process of rebuilding the panel following the end of Agarkar’s tenure.
Former India spinner Pragyan Ojha is currently serving as the interim chairman of the men’s selection panel. Shiv Sundar Das, Ajay Ratra and RP Singh are also members of the current selection committee.
The BCCI has specified eligibility requirements for candidates applying for the selection committee position. Applicants must have played at least seven Test matches, or 30 first class matches, or 10 One Day Internationals and 20 first class matches. Candidates must also have retired from cricket for at least five years.
These requirements mean Jadeja would not currently qualify for the role because he remains an active international cricketer. He continues to represent India and has recently been involved with the national team. Therefore, his “What’s the procedure?” comment is best understood as a humorous interaction rather than a genuine application announcement.
The timing of the post, however, made it particularly interesting for fans. Jadeja made the comment shortly after the BCCI publicised the vacancy. His response quickly spread across social media, with supporters interpreting the remark in different ways. Some treated it as a joke, while others used it to discuss the possibility of Jadeja eventually moving into an administrative or selection role after his playing career.
The comment also came during a period of significant change in Indian cricket. Agarkar’s departure marks the end of a more than three year period in which the selection committee was involved in several major decisions concerning the national team.
During Agarkar’s tenure, India won the 2024 T20 World Cup, the 2025 Champions Trophy and the 2026 T20 World Cup. India also won two Asia Cup titles and two consecutive Asian Games gold medals during the period. The team also reached the 2023 ODI World Cup final.
Agarkar’s tenure also coincided with an important transition involving several senior Indian players. The selection committee was involved in decisions concerning the future of established stars, including the Test and T20I retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. These decisions generated considerable discussion among Indian cricket supporters.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir recently praised Agarkar following the end of his tenure. Gambhir highlighted the three ICC trophies won during Agarkar’s period and described his approach as focused on putting the team first.
Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin also spoke positively about Agarkar’s work as chairman of selectors. Ashwin acknowledged that the role required the former India pacer to make several difficult decisions, including decisions involving senior players.
For Jadeja, the focus remains on his playing career. The veteran all rounder continues to be regarded as an experienced member of India’s squad, particularly because of his ability to contribute with both bat and ball and his high level of fielding.
His future in India’s ODI plans has also been a subject of discussion as the team looks ahead to the 2027 ODI World Cup. India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak recently said that Jadeja remains in contention because of his experience and all round abilities.
Jadeja has also continued to play Test cricket. His experience gives India an important option in different playing conditions, particularly when the team requires a combination of batting depth, spin bowling and athletic fielding.
The all rounder’s recent social media activity therefore attracted attention partly because of his established position within Indian cricket. However, there is currently no evidence that he is looking to leave international cricket and move into selection administration.
The BCCI’s vacancy is instead part of the board’s regular process of appointing members to its selection panel. The new selector will have significant responsibilities, including assessing players, selecting the senior national team across formats, monitoring domestic and international performances and helping develop India’s future talent pool.
The selector will also be involved in decisions concerning team combinations, player development and leadership appointments. The position therefore carries considerable responsibility within Indian cricket.
Jadeja’s comment has added a lighter moment to what is otherwise an important administrative transition. His short question was enough to generate widespread discussion, but it should not be interpreted as confirmation that he wants the position.
The incident also demonstrates how quickly a short social media interaction involving a high profile cricketer can become a major talking point. Jadeja’s response contained very little information, but its timing and the vacant position made it particularly noticeable.
For now, the BCCI will continue with the process of identifying Agarkar’s replacement. The board has not indicated that an active international player such as Jadeja is being considered for the role.
Agarkar’s departure closes one chapter in India’s selection process, while the appointment of a new selector will begin another. The incoming member will inherit a team that has enjoyed considerable success in recent years but is also entering a period of transition.
As for Jadeja, his immediate priority remains cricket on the field. His playful question may have sparked speculation, but there is no confirmed indication that the India all rounder plans to apply for the vacant selection committee position.
The episode ultimately appears to be a light hearted social media moment rather than an indication of a major career change. Until Jadeja or the BCCI makes an official announcement, any suggestion that he is seeking the selector’s job remains speculation.
