The Varanasi Cricket Stadium, currently under construction, is generating excitement as it is expected to be ready by 2025 and likely to host a match during the T20 World Cup 2026. This prestigious tournament will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, featuring 20 teams competing for the coveted title. The tournament format will begin with a group stage, followed by the Super Eight, semi-finals, and the final, creating a thrilling atmosphere for cricket fans worldwide.
Unlike the previous edition, which took place in June across the USA and the Caribbean, the 2026 T20 World Cup is slated to occur in the February-March window, aligning with the more traditional cricket season in India. With several venues across the country already capable of staging T20 matches, India will share hosting responsibilities with Sri Lanka. However, recent reports suggest that the new stadium in Varanasi could be ready in time to accommodate at least one match, adding a significant venue to India's cricketing landscape.
The foundation stone for the Varanasi Cricket Stadium was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September of last year. Located near the Ring Road in the Rajatalab area of Varanasi, the stadium is being constructed at a cost of approximately Rs 450 crore, encompassing an area of over 30 acres. The Uttar Pradesh government has invested Rs 121 crore for land acquisition, while the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will contribute Rs 330 crore towards the stadium's construction.
What sets this stadium apart is its unique design; the spectator gallery will be themed around Lord Shiva, resembling the iconic steps of Varanasi's ghats. This aesthetic choice not only honors the cultural significance of the region but also aims to create an immersive experience for spectators.
Once completed, this stadium will be Uttar Pradesh's third international cricket venue, joining the ranks of Kanpur and Lucknow. The Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium in Lucknow hosted five matches during the recent ODI World Cup, while Kanpur’s Green Park Stadium has a history of hosting World Cup matches in 1987 and 1996.
The anticipation surrounding the Varanasi Cricket Stadium highlights the growing importance of cricket in India, as well as the government’s commitment to developing sports infrastructure. As the 2026 T20 World Cup approaches, the stadium's readiness will play a crucial role in showcasing India's cricketing prowess on the global stage. With its rich cultural backdrop and modern facilities, the Varanasi Cricket Stadium is poised to become a landmark venue in the world of cricket.
