As the series approaches, Ponting’s insights reflect his deep understanding of both teams' strengths and weaknesses, and while he predicts a strong performance from Australia, he recognizes the potential for India to challenge them, especially with a talented lineup and key players like Pant.

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has shared his predictions for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, where Australia will face India in a highly anticipated five-match Test series starting on November 22 at Perth Stadium. With a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final at stake, Ponting has confidently predicted a 3-1 victory for the hosts, Australia, and provided insights into the key players and challenges that could shape the series.

Ponting's prediction of a 3-1 series win for Australia stems from his belief that the hosts are in a more settled and experienced position, particularly in their home conditions. The legendary cricketer made these predictions in August, and despite India's recent loss to New Zealand, Ponting remains confident in his forecast. One of the key factors in Ponting’s prediction is India's bowling lineup, especially the absence of pacer Mohammed Shami. Ponting highlighted the significant impact Shami’s absence could have, as his presence is crucial for India to take the 20 wickets required to win a Test match in Australia. He pointed out that while India’s batting lineup is strong and capable, their ability to dismiss Australian batsmen will be more challenging without Shami.

Ponting acknowledged that India could win one of the Tests in the series, but he still believes that Australia’s overall strength and experience will see them emerge victorious. "I think India will win a Test match somewhere through the five Test matches. But I still think now, Australia probably look a bit more settled, a bit more experienced, and we know that they're a very hard team to beat at home. So I’ll stick with the 3-1," Ponting stated.

In terms of individual performances, Ponting named Steve Smith and Rishabh Pant as the likely top run-scorers of the series. Ponting explained that Smith’s move from opening to his familiar No. 4 position boosts his chances of having a strong series. He noted that Smith's brief stint as an opener hadn't been as successful as hoped, and now that he’s returning to No. 4, he would have more to prove and could reclaim his usual spot as one of Australia's most prolific run-scorers. "The fact that he's moved back down from opener to No. 4 probably makes it feel like he's got more of a point to prove...that maybe he shouldn’t have gone up to open in the first place and that No. 4 is his spot," Ponting added.

Additionally, Ponting also mentioned Rishabh Pant as a strong contender for the leading run-scorer. He pointed out that Pant's return to the squad and his likely role in the middle order, where the ball will be less challenging, could give him the perfect platform to score big runs. Given Pant's aggressive and impactful style of batting, Ponting believes he could be a key player for India in this series.

As the series approaches, Ponting’s insights reflect his deep understanding of both teams' strengths and weaknesses, and while he predicts a strong performance from Australia, he recognizes the potential for India to challenge them, especially with a talented lineup and key players like Pant. Ultimately, Ponting remains firm in his prediction that Australia will come out on top, securing a 3-1 victory in this exciting Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
