Paarl Royals have secured the services of Australian batter and recent Big Bash League (BBL) winner Mitchell Owen as a replacement for Joe Root in the ongoing SA20 2025. Root, who has been a key performer for the Royals, is leaving to join the England squad for their upcoming India tour.
Owen, 23, earned his spot in the Royals' squad following a stellar performance in the BBL final, where he smashed a title-winning century for Hobart Hurricanes. His 39-ball hundred caught the attention of T20 leagues worldwide, and while he may still be waiting for an IPL contract, the SA20 opportunity marks a significant step in his career.
The Paarl Royals announced Owen’s arrival through their social media, stating, "Fresh off a BBL-winning hundred, Mitch Owen is ready to bring the Gees for the Royals!" The young batter will now look to replicate his BBL heroics as the Royals prepare for the playoffs.
Joe Root departs the tournament as one of SA20’s top run-scorers, having accumulated 279 runs in 8 innings at a strike rate of 140.20, including three fifties. His absence will be felt, but the Royals remain in a strong position, having already secured a playoff spot and a top-two finish, ensuring their place in the qualifier against MI Cape Town next week.
Before heading into the knockout stage, the Royals will face Sunrisers Eastern Cape in their final league-stage game on February 1 at St George’s Park in Gqeberha. The team will hope that Owen's explosive batting form can help them claim their first SA20 title.
