A source close to the selection committee mentioned that, while Ayub’s fitness remains uncertain, the selectors are hopeful that he will recover in time for the tournament.

Saim Ayub, the promising young opener for Pakistan, is set to be included in the preliminary squad for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, despite facing a significant injury setback. The 23-year-old sustained a fractured ankle during the second Test against South Africa last week, which has left him sidelined for up to six weeks. The injury occurred on the first day of the Test, and Ayub has since been placed in an Ankle Medical Moon Boot as part of his rehabilitation.

While the injury has temporarily halted his playing career, Ayub’s recent form and his promising performances in the 50-over format have convinced the Pakistan selectors to include him in the provisional squad for the Champions Trophy, set to begin on February 19, 2025. According to reports from PTI, the selectors have decided that despite the injury, Ayub’s inclusion in the preliminary squad is essential due to his recent success and growth as an opener in limited-overs cricket.

Ayub has been in remarkable form recently, with standout performances during Pakistan's tours to Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. He played a crucial role in Pakistan's dominant 3-0 victory over South Africa in the ODI series, scoring two centuries, which solidified his reputation as a reliable and powerful opener. His ability to anchor the innings and provide stability at the top of the order has made him a key player in Pakistan’s limited-overs lineup.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has sent Ayub to London for further medical consultation to get the best possible advice regarding his recovery and his chances of being fit for the Champions Trophy. A source close to the selection committee mentioned that, while Ayub’s fitness remains uncertain, the selectors are hopeful that he will recover in time for the tournament. Even if Ayub is not fully fit before the Champions Trophy, the selectors have made it clear that he can be replaced by another player, as long as it is done before the final squad submission deadline.

Pakistan’s final squad for the Champions Trophy needs to be submitted by February 12, 2025, without requiring clearance from the tournament’s technical committee. If Ayub is unable to recover in time, alternatives such as Fakhar Zaman, who was recently dropped from the limited-overs squads, could be called up as an opening partner for the team. Zaman's experience at the top of the order has made him a strong contender, and the selectors are considering him as a backup if Ayub cannot make the squad. In the absence of both Ayub and Zaman, Abdullah Shafique or Imam-ul-Haq are expected to be named in the squad to fill the opening slots.

Saim Ayub’s injury and uncertain recovery timeline have added an element of unpredictability for Pakistan’s Champions Trophy preparations. However, his inclusion in the preliminary squad, even while injured, reflects his growing importance in the team and his potential to be a key player in the upcoming ICC event. Fans and selectors alike are hopeful that Ayub’s rehabilitation will proceed smoothly, and that he will be able to play a crucial role in Pakistan’s campaign at the prestigious tournament.
