Australia's 19-year-old opener, Sam Konstas, made a memorable start to his international career during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India, experiencing both the thrill and intensity of Test cricket. His debut was marked by a fiery encounter with Indian batting legend Virat Kohli, a moment that will stay with him forever.

During the opening Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Konstas faced a baptism of fire in his first outing in the longest format of the game. Amid the high-pressure environment of Test cricket, he had a heated exchange with Kohli, which included an intense shoulder bump. While tensions flared on the field, the emotional significance of playing against his idol added depth to the experience. A viral video from earlier in Konstas' career, where he expressed his admiration for Kohli, added an emotional twist to the encounter, as Konstas found himself up close with the cricketer he had always looked up to.

Despite the competitive nature of the series, Kohli's gesture of warmth after the final Test was a moment Konstas will never forget. After the match, Kohli, ever the sportsman, wished the young Australian well ahead of his upcoming Sri Lanka tour, offering support and encouragement. Reflecting on the exchange, Konstas opened up in an interview with CODE Sports:

"I had a little chat with him after the game, telling him that I idolise him. It's obviously a huge honour playing against him," Konstas said. "When I was facing him, I was just thinking, 'Wow, Virat Kohli is batting.' The crowd was going crazy, chanting his name. It was surreal."

Konstas also expressed his admiration for Kohli's humility and down-to-earth nature. "He was very humble, a lovely person. He just wished me all the best and said, 'hopefully you go well on the Sri Lanka tour'—he said that if I’m in," Konstas recalled, showing how much Kohli’s kindness meant to him.

Konstas made an immediate impact in his debut match, scoring a half-century in front of a packed crowd of 90,000 at the MCG. For the young opener, the atmosphere was overwhelming, and the significance of the occasion was not lost on him.

"It was my first time playing in front of 90,000 people at the MCG, and I was just thinking, 'Holy crap, this is surreal,'" Konstas admitted. "It was just incredible to be part of such a historic event. Playing against legends like Kohli and Bumrah, and with legends like Steve Smith and Pat Cummins, was everything I’d dreamt of as a kid. I was just trying to soak up every second of it, learn from the best, and take it all in."

Having this opportunity at just 19 years old is something Konstas doesn't take lightly. "I’m very lucky, as a 19-year-old, to be getting this kind of experience and learning from the best," he said, acknowledging the invaluable lessons he's gaining from some of the biggest names in the game.

Konstas’ Test debut was just the beginning. Before heading to Sri Lanka for the national team’s tour, he will first play a few matches in the Big Bash League (BBL) for the Sydney Thunder, under the leadership of David Warner. His BBL stint will offer more opportunities to further hone his skills in front of a different kind of audience, with the fast-paced nature of T20 cricket offering a new set of challenges. After the BBL, he will head to Cricket Australia's preparatory camp in the UAE, where he will continue to train ahead of his next major challenge.

Konstas' next appearance in red-ball cricket will come on January 29 when Australia faces Sri Lanka in Galle. For Konstas, this marks another thrilling chapter in his cricketing journey, one that continues to fulfill the dreams he held as a child watching his idols on television. With a promising future ahead, Konstas is excited for what lies in store and grateful for every opportunity to learn from the legends of the game.

He just wished me all the best and said, 'hopefully you go well on the Sri Lanka tour'—he said that if I’m in," Konstas recalled, showing how much Kohli’s kindness meant to him.
