The Sri Lanka Cricket Board has officially announced the appointment of Sanath Jayasuriya as the head coach of the national team, effective from October 1, 2024. Jayasuriya will serve a contract lasting 18 months, with the tenure set to run until March 31, 2026. This decision comes on the heels of Jayasuriya’s successful stint as the interim head coach, where he played a crucial role in revitalizing the team’s performance during recent international tours.
Under Jayasuriya's leadership, Sri Lanka has demonstrated significant improvement, particularly following a disappointing campaign in the T20 World Cup. The team rebounded with notable performances, most prominently during their ODI series against India, where they showcased resilience and skill. This resurgence continued with a remarkable Test victory in England, despite ultimately losing the series. Most recently, the Sri Lankan team achieved a historic 2-0 clean sweep over New Zealand in the Test series, marking a high point in their recent cricketing endeavors. These successes have propelled Sri Lanka into third place on the World Test Championship (WTC) points table, a clear indication of the team’s upward trajectory.
The Sri Lanka Cricket Board, in its announcement, acknowledged the positive impact of Jayasuriya’s interim coaching and the team’s overall improvement in performance. “The Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket made this decision taking into consideration the team’s good performances in the recent tours against India, England, and New Zealand, where Jayasuriya was in charge as the 'interim head coach,'” the statement read. Jayasuriya’s experience and strategic approach have been instrumental in fostering a competitive spirit within the squad.
With Jayasuriya at the helm, Sri Lanka is poised to compete in significant upcoming tournaments, including the T20 World Cup scheduled for 2026, which Sri Lanka will co-host alongside India. This major tournament presents an exciting opportunity for the team to showcase their talent on a global stage.
In the immediate future, Sri Lanka has several critical assignments lined up. The team will face the West Indies in a three-match T20I series followed by a three-match ODI series at home. Subsequently, they will travel to New Zealand for a similar set of matches in December. Additionally, Sri Lanka is set to embark on a two-match Test series against South Africa starting on November 27, further testing their mettle in international cricket.
Overall, Sanath Jayasuriya’s appointment as head coach marks a new chapter for Sri Lankan cricket, with hopes that his leadership will continue to inspire and elevate the team's performance in the months and years to come.
