Sanjay Manjrekar has raised important concerns regarding KL Rahul's performance throughout his 50-Test career, particularly focusing on his recent outing against Bangladesh. In a match where expectations were high for the senior batter to anchor the innings after an early collapse, Rahul succumbed to pressure, becoming the only player dismissed by a spinner on a day largely dominated by fast bowlers. This moment has highlighted ongoing issues in his batting approach.

Manjrekar characterized Rahul's innings as lacking purpose, stating, “This has been the KL Rahul story. It’s remarkable how he can play a brilliant innings at the Test level but then, in his next two or three innings, it feels like he’s gone back to square one.” He emphasized that Rahul's mindset appeared to be problematic, suggesting that he was not playing with the instinctive aggression that other Indian batters exhibit.

Reflecting on his own career, Manjrekar noted, “In the second half of my career, I found myself overly focused on my technique and anticipating specific deliveries, rather than trusting my instincts.” He pointed out that while other Indian players seem to prioritize scoring, Rahul’s approach often seems tentative, which could be a significant temperamental issue affecting his game.

Despite having scored several impressive centuries in challenging conditions, Rahul's overall batting average of 34 raises questions about his consistency and temperament. Manjrekar remarked, “He has brilliant hundreds to his name, yet the average tells a different story—one that we need to consider as we analyze his performance.”

Rahul was making his first Test appearance since January and was included in the playing XI ahead of Sarfaraz Khan. He entered the match on the back of a second-innings fifty in the Duleep Trophy, indicating that he had the potential to contribute significantly to the team. However, Manjrekar’s insights suggest that for Rahul to fulfill his potential and stabilize his place in the team, he needs to overcome the psychological barriers that have hindered him for so long.
