The Gujarat CID Crime Branch has initiated a thorough investigation into a massive financial scam involving high-profile cricketers Shubman Gill, Rahul Tewatia, Mohit Sharma, and B Sai Sudharsan. These cricketers are connected to a chit fund scheme that defrauded investors of approximately ₹450 crore. The investigation began after the arrest of Bhupendrasinh Jala, a key figure believed to be the mastermind behind this Ponzi scheme.
Jala’s arrest marked a significant turning point in the case. During his questioning, Jala disclosed that the cricketers had made substantial investments in the scheme but had not seen any returns on their money. As the investigation progressed, the authorities focused on the financial operations of the scheme. The CID broadened its scope to probe how the scam was carried out, examining transactions, bank records, and an informal ledger that had been maintained by Jala. Rushik Mehta, a key associate of Jala who was responsible for managing the scheme’s financial dealings, was also arrested. The authorities are closely scrutinizing Mehta’s role, and they have stated that appropriate action will be taken if he is found guilty.
Shubman Gill, one of India’s rising cricket stars and the captain of the Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024, is said to have invested ₹1.95 crore in the scheme. Meanwhile, Rahul Tewatia, Mohit Sharma, and B Sai Sudharsan, all also members of the Gujarat Titans team in IPL 2024, contributed smaller sums. While the cricketers’ investments have raised eyebrows, their involvement in the scheme indicates that even high-profile public figures are not immune to financial scams.
The scale of the fraud is staggering, initially reported to be worth ₹6000 crore, but further investigations have narrowed it down to ₹450 crore. The CID officials have confirmed that the informal ledger seized from Jala’s operations reveals transactions worth around ₹52 crore, though this figure could rise as further raids and investigations unfold. The CID has conducted multiple raids across various locations to gather more evidence related to the fraudulent activities, with the aim of recovering the defrauded money.
The involvement of prominent cricketers in this financial fraud has captured significant public attention. All four players were part of the Gujarat Titans squad during the 2024 IPL season, with Shubman Gill captaining the team. The news has raised questions about the players’ financial management and the potential risks associated with their investments.
The CID has made it clear that the cricketers will be called in for questioning as the investigation progresses, depending on their availability. This highlights the seriousness with which the authorities are pursuing the case, and their commitment to ensuring that all individuals involved, regardless of their status, face justice.
As the investigation continues, the CID is working to piece together the full extent of the scam, which has not only implicated the cricketers but also highlighted the widespread nature of fraudulent financial schemes. The case serves as a stark reminder of the risks of such investment schemes, even for individuals in the public eye.
With raids ongoing and more evidence being gathered, the authorities are determined to track down all those involved in the scam and recover the defrauded funds. This case is set to become a major legal matter, with far-reaching consequences for those implicated in the fraudulent activities. The Gujarat CID Crime Branch remains focused on uncovering the full scope of the scam and ensuring justice for the victims of the financial fraud.
