Sohail Tanvir made history in the Nepal Premier League (NPL) 2024 by becoming the first player to claim a 5-wicket haul in the tournament.

Sohail Tanvir made history in the Nepal Premier League (NPL) 2024 by becoming the first player to claim a 5-wicket haul in the tournament. The left-arm seamer, who retired from international cricket in March 2023, achieved the remarkable feat during the match between Kathmandu Gurkhas and Chitwan Rhinos on December 2, 2024. Tanvir's brilliant bowling performance helped the Rhinos restrict Kathmandu Gurkhas to just 111/9 in their allotted 20 overs, with the 39-year-old finishing with outstanding figures of 5 for 21 from his 4 overs.

Tanvir’s performance was nothing short of sensational, especially considering the nature of the T20 format. He made an instant impact, taking the wicket of Stephen Eskinazi for just 2 runs off his very first delivery. His momentum continued as he dismissed Michael Levitt for 25 in his second over, followed by Bhim Sharki’s wicket in his third over. After a brief rest, Tanvir returned for his second spell and removed the opposition’s skipper Karan KC and Shahab Alam in his final over, completing his five-wicket haul. His clinical spell not only restricted the Kathmandu side to a modest total but also helped his team gain a significant advantage in the match.

Known for his unorthodox action and wicket-taking ability, Sohail Tanvir has been a seasoned campaigner in T20 leagues around the world. Prior to his retirement from international cricket, Tanvir was a key player for Pakistan in various formats, and he was a part of their T20 World Cup-winning team in 2009. His T20 career has been filled with notable performances, with 389 T20 wickets to his name.

Tanvir's journey as a cricketer has been defined by his ability to adapt and thrive in numerous domestic and franchise leagues across the globe. He was part of the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he played for the Shane Warne-led Rajasthan Royals, contributing to their first-ever IPL title. Tanvir's success in the IPL made him one of the standout performers of the league's early years. His IPL achievements include being the first-ever Purple Cap winner, a recognition for the highest wicket-taker in a season. Additionally, Tanvir has represented multiple franchises in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), including Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, Multan Sultans, and Quetta Gladiators.

Beyond the IPL and PSL, Tanvir has also competed in various other T20 leagues, including the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), and more recently, the World Championship of Legends in the United Kingdom. His ability to adapt to different playing conditions and continue delivering performances across multiple leagues has made him a sought-after player in T20 tournaments around the world.

Tanvir’s return to the spotlight with his 5-wicket haul in the NPL 2024 showcases his ongoing ability to perform at the highest level in the T20 format, and it adds another significant achievement to his illustrious cricketing career. As a seasoned campaigner with a wealth of experience, Sohail Tanvir continues to leave his mark on the T20 scene and remains an influential figure in franchise cricket worldwide.
