Mumbai:
India’s selection committee has named 26-year-old left-arm spinner Ravi Chauhan in the squad for the five-Test series against England, signalling the team’s intent to deepen its spin arsenal even in traditionally pace-friendly conditions. Chauhan’s inclusion follows a breakthrough season in domestic cricket and his role in India’s victorious T20 World Cup campaign last year.
Domestic Credentials and World Cup Role
Chauhan emerged on the national radar during the 2023–24 Ranji Trophy, finishing the season with 47 wickets at an average of 22.15. His standout performance came in the final, where he recorded figures of 6 for 45 on a turning track, guiding Vidarbha to the title. Though primarily known for his red-ball exploits, Chauhan contributed three economical overs in the World Cup final, helping to strangle the opposition’s middle order.
Selector Harvinder Singh praised Chauhan’s adaptability: “He has developed subtle variations—arm-balls, sliders and a flatter trajectory—that can be effective even on greener pitches. His temperament and work ethic make him a strong candidate for Test cricket.”
Preparing for English Conditions
India’s spin department for the England tour will also include veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav. Chauhan’s first-class record of 155 wickets at 24.80 suggests he can complement this established duo. England’s batting line-up, accustomed to pace, has shown vulnerability against left-arm spin in subcontinental tours, making Chauhan’s skill set strategically valuable.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan noted, “Left-arm spin on the rough outside the right-hander’s off stump has always tested English batsmen. India are right to back a specialist like Chauhan who can launch attacks from both ends.”
Balance and Bench Strength
India’s traditional reliance on two spinners will shift to a three-man spin bench, offering greater rotation through the series. Head coach Rahul Dravid emphasized squad balance: “Tests in England demand a mix of pace and spin. Ravi brings fresh energy and depth to our bowling attack, and his fielding sharpness adds value in all formats.”
Chauhan’s fielding, particularly his agility in the inner circle, was widely lauded during the IPL season, where he also claimed 14 wickets and took 12 catches. His athleticism and close-in catching ability will be assets on seaming English outfields.
Test Debut and Expectations
India’s first Test begins at Edgbaston on July 10, followed by matches at Lord’s, Trent Bridge, Headingley, and The Oval. Chauhan is expected to compete for a playing XI spot, likely rotating with Kuldeep depending on pitch composition. Captain Rohit Sharma expressed confidence: “We back all our debutants to make an impact. Ravi has the skills and temperament required for Test cricket.”
Chauhan himself acknowledged the challenge: “Playing Test cricket in England is a dream and a tough assignment. I’ve prepared with longer spells in the nets and studied opposition footwork against left-arm spin. I’m ready to contribute in whatever role the team needs.”
Looking Ahead
Chauhan’s promotion underscores India’s wider strategy of nurturing multi-format players with strong red-ball foundations. If successful, he could become the third left-arm spinner to establish himself in recent years, joining Ashwin and Yadav. With the series offering 25 Test points in the World Test Championship, Chauhan’s performance could prove pivotal in India’s bid for top-ranked status.
