In a commanding display, Sri Lanka A triumphed over Pakistan A by seven wickets in the first semifinal of the Emerging Teams Asia Cup 2024, held at Al Amerat Cricket Ground in Oman. This victory not only secures Sri Lanka A a place in the tournament final but also highlights their dominance throughout the competition.
Pakistan A won the toss and elected to bat first, but they struggled to establish momentum against a disciplined Sri Lankan bowling attack. The team managed to post a modest total of 135 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in their 20 overs. Opener Omair Bin Yousuf emerged as the standout performer for Pakistan, scoring a determined 68 runs. His innings provided some stability amid a flurry of wickets, as Pakistan A lost crucial batsmen at regular intervals.
The turning point of the match came with the introduction of Dushan Hemantha into the bowling attack. Hemantha showcased his exceptional skills, taking four wickets for just 21 runs. His leg-spin bowling was particularly effective, exploiting the conditions and dismantling Pakistan's middle order. Alongside him, Nipun Rashika and Eshan Malinga provided valuable support, taking two wickets each and restricting Pakistan’s ability to accelerate in the later stages of the innings. Rashika finished with figures of 2/21, while Malinga chipped in with 2/28.
Faced with a chase of 136 runs, Sri Lanka A approached their innings with confidence. Although they experienced an early setback when Yashoda Lanka was dismissed for 11 due to an unusual obstruction of the field, Lahiru Udara quickly set the tone for the chase. He played an explosive knock, scoring 43 runs off just 25 balls, including two sixes off Mohammad Imran. His aggressive batting helped the Lankans recover and build momentum.
Ahan Wickramasinghe played a crucial role in anchoring the innings, demonstrating remarkable composure after the early dismissal of Lanka. Wickramasinghe rotated the strike efficiently, hitting key boundaries that kept the scoreboard ticking. He finished the innings unbeaten on 52, showcasing maturity beyond his years.
Wickramasinghe found steady support from Sahan Arachchige, who contributed a patient 17 runs not out. Despite a brief resurgence from Pakistan A, where bowler Abbas Afridi claimed the wicket of Nuwanidu Fernando for just 9 runs, Sri Lanka A remained in control throughout the chase. They reached their target with relative ease, finishing at 137 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in just 16.3 overs.
With this impressive performance, Sri Lanka A has firmly established itself as a formidable contender in the Emerging Teams Asia Cup 2024, and they will be looking to carry this momentum into the final as they aim for the championship title.
