Sri Lanka has announced the inclusion of uncapped off-spinner Nishan Peiris in their squad for the second and final Test against New Zealand, which is set to begin on Thursday, September 26, in Galle. This decision comes after experienced pacer Vishwa Fernando was ruled out due to an injury, adding a layer of urgency for the hosts as they aim to build on their recent success.
Fernando developed "tightness" in his right hamstring and will undergo rehabilitation at Sri Lanka Cricket's high-performance center. The 33-year-old fast bowler did not participate in the playing XI for the first Test, which Sri Lanka won convincingly by 63 runs. During the recent tour of England, Fernando played in two out of three Tests, showcasing his experience and skill, but his absence now leaves a gap in the bowling lineup.
Nishan Peiris, 27, has been called up to the national side for the third time, having previously been included in the squad in 2018 and earlier this year, though he has yet to make his senior debut. His addition comes at a crucial time, especially with Ramesh Mendis's form coming under scrutiny after the first Test. Mendis managed to take three wickets in each inning against New Zealand but struggled to maintain consistent line and length. In the first innings, he conceded 101 runs in 23.5 overs with an economy rate of 4.24, and in the second innings, he leaked 83 runs in 25 overs at an economy of 3.32—the highest among Sri Lankan spinners.
Peiris has made a name for himself in domestic cricket, claiming 172 first-class wickets across 41 matches at an impressive average of 24.37. He recently demonstrated his capabilities by taking three wickets in the first unofficial Test between Sri Lanka A and South Africa A. His inclusion in the squad not only provides a fresh option for the bowling attack but also introduces the potential for a new spin partnership, crucial for exploiting conditions in Galle.
Sri Lanka’s victory over New Zealand in the opening Test was significant, marking their fourth win in eight matches during the ongoing World Test Championship cycle. This success has elevated them to third place in the standings with a point percentage of 50, providing a solid foundation for the second Test.
As the team prepares for the upcoming match, Peiris's addition to the squad represents a strategic move to bolster the bowling attack and adapt to the playing conditions in Galle. With fans eager to see how the new spinner performs, the upcoming Test promises to be an exciting clash as Sri Lanka seeks to secure a series victory against a competitive New Zealand side.
