Spinner Prabath Jayasuriya was the standout performer as Sri Lanka clinched a thrilling 63-run victory over New Zealand in the first Test of their two-match series at Galle International Stadium on Monday (September 23). This match showcased the skills of Jayasuriya, who played a pivotal role in securing a much-needed win for the hosts.
On the final day of the Test, Sri Lanka was defending a modest target of 68 runs, needing just two wickets to seal their victory. The tension was palpable as New Zealand resumed their innings at 207/8. Jayasuriya quickly made his mark by dismissing Rachin Ravindra, who had been holding the innings together with a fighting 92 runs. He trapped Ravindra in the second over of the day, significantly shifting the momentum in Sri Lanka's favor.
In his next over, Jayasuriya continued to exert pressure on the New Zealand batting lineup by bowling out William O'Rourke for a duck. This double breakthrough ensured that New Zealand could only add 4 runs to their overnight score, ultimately collapsing for 211. With bowling figures of 9 for 204, Jayasuriya’s performance was instrumental in Sri Lanka’s success, and he was rightfully awarded the player of the match.
During the post-match presentation, Jayasuriya reflected on his approach to bowling, emphasizing the importance of consistency and sticking to the basics. His performance not only highlighted his skill but also showcased the effectiveness of spin bowling on a turning track, a traditional hallmark of Sri Lankan cricket.
This victory marked an important moment for Sri Lanka, as it set the tone for the remainder of the series. The team demonstrated resilience and determination, overcoming challenges to secure a win against a competitive New Zealand side. As the series continues, all eyes will be on Jayasuriya and the rest of the Sri Lankan team to see if they can maintain this winning momentum.
