Sri Lanka’s captain, Dhananjaya de Silva, won the toss and decided to bat first against New Zealand in the opening Test match at Galle International Stadium on Wednesday, September 18.

In a strategic move, Sri Lanka has made two changes to their playing XI from the side that secured a victory over England in their previous Test match in London. The hosts have brought in spinners Ramesh Mendis and Prabath Jayasuriya, replacing pacers Milan Rathnayake and Vishwa Fernando. This adjustment highlights Sri Lanka's focus on harnessing the spin-friendly conditions of the Galle pitch.

New Zealand, led by Tim Southee, is coming off their most recent Test match, which ended in abandonment. The Blackcaps have opted for a balanced approach, selecting two specialist spinners—Mitchell Santner and Ajaz Patel—alongside two pacers, Southee and William O'Rourke. Additionally, Rachin Ravindra and Glenn Phillips will provide further spin options, ensuring a varied attack.

Following the toss, Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva explained his decision, stating, "The decision to bat first is straightforward given the conditions here in Galle. We’ve chosen to play with two pacers and two spinners. The mood in the team is very positive, and everyone is well-motivated for this series."

As the Test series begins, both teams are looking to make a strong start. Sri Lanka’s choice to bat first reflects their confidence in their batting lineup and the conditions at Galle, while New Zealand's varied bowling attack aims to capitalize on any opportunities that arise.
