Ben Stokes has addressed the controversy surrounding England's decision to promote young Jacob Bethell to the number three spot in the batting order for his Test debut against New Zealand in Christchurch. Bethell, 21, is set to make his first appearance in a Test match after impressing in domestic cricket with Warwickshire. However, the decision to place him at number three has raised eyebrows, as he has never batted higher than number four in his 20 first-class matches and has yet to score a century in senior cricket.
Despite the questions surrounding the move, England’s captain, Stokes, is confident that the team’s management has made the right call. Stokes pointed out that while he understands the surprise the decision may cause, the team’s management always trusts their instincts when making such choices.
“You can totally understand the question marks around it, but we’ve always done what we feel is right for the team,” Stokes said in a recent interview. “We’ve made decisions based on what we think will work for the group and for the individual, and it has worked for us in the past. So I think we know what we’re doing.”
He further emphasized that the England selectors are not in the business of making decisions to simply “wind people up.” Stokes explained that the selection choices are always based on careful consideration of a player’s strengths, and when given the opportunity to make a decision, the team’s management sticks to their standards and their plan.
“We’re not picking people just to wind people up. We do know what we’re doing. We’ve got a good track record of making decisions for the benefit of the team,” Stokes added. “When you’re in a position to make decisions, you’ve got to do it by your standards and your means. You’ve got to trust your own judgment.”
Bethell’s promotion to number three, though unorthodox, is part of a larger trend in English cricket where selectors have shown a willingness to back young, promising players in key roles. This approach has often paid off, with England unafraid to take risks in order to build for the future.
Stokes also acknowledged that Bethell’s debut is a big moment for the young player, but he believes the youngster is capable of handling the responsibility. "Bethell has shown great potential, and we believe he's ready for the challenge, no matter where he bats in the order. We have faith in his ability."
As England prepares for their Test series against New Zealand, all eyes will be on Bethell as he takes on a significant role at number three, and whether his performance justifies the team’s bold selection decision.
