“But if a captain is not available right at the beginning of the series, it puts a lot of pressure on the deputy leader, and that is not easy.” Furthermore, on Sports Tak, Gavaskar raised questions about India's chances of reaching the World Test Championship (WTC) final, emphasizing that the immediate focus should be on winning the series against Australia.

Indian cricketing icon Sunil Gavaskar has expressed serious concerns regarding Team India's recent performances under head coach Gautam Gambhir, particularly following the team's alarming 0-3 Test series whitewash at home against New Zealand. In a series of interviews with India Today and Sports Tak, Gavaskar did not hold back in his critique, addressing both the coaching strategy and leadership dynamics within the team as they prepare for their upcoming tour to Australia.

Gavaskar's disappointment stems not only from the home series loss to New Zealand but also from a broader trend of underwhelming performances. He pointed out that India's 0-3 defeat marks their first-ever clean sweep in a home Test series, a statistic that underscores the severity of the situation. "The results speak for themselves," he remarked. "Even in Sri Lanka, India lost an ODI series after a long time. And now here, it's a loss—it's a terrible loss." This loss to New Zealand also ended India's 12-year unbeaten streak in home Test series, highlighting the scale of the failure.

The legendary batsman’s remarks reflect a growing anxiety over India’s preparedness for the challenging five-match series in Australia, set to commence on November 22. Compounding the issue is the uncertainty surrounding the availability of captain Rohit Sharma for the opening Test in Perth due to personal reasons. Gavaskar warned that Rohit’s absence could negatively impact the team's cohesion and morale, stressing the need for decisive leadership as they face a formidable opponent like Australia.

Gavaskar urged Ajit Agarkar, the chief of the BCCI's selection committee, to clarify the captaincy situation. He suggested that if Rohit is unable to play, Jasprit Bumrah should take over as captain for the entire series. “A captain should play in the opening Test. It would have been different if he were injured,” Gavaskar explained. “But if a captain is not available right at the beginning of the series, it puts a lot of pressure on the deputy leader, and that is not easy.”

Furthermore, on Sports Tak, Gavaskar raised questions about India's chances of reaching the World Test Championship (WTC) final, emphasizing that the immediate focus should be on winning the series against Australia. “I don’t think India can beat Australia 4-0 in the Test series,” he asserted. “I don’t want to talk about the World Test Championship Final. Now, just focus on trying to win the series in Australia.”

Gavaskar's candid insights reflect not only his deep understanding of the game but also his commitment to seeing Indian cricket rise to its potential. With a looming series against a historically strong opponent, the pressure is mounting for both the players and the coaching staff to deliver results that restore confidence and pride in Indian cricket.
