The year 2024 will likely be remembered as a painful chapter in South African cricket history, as both the Men's and Women's T20 World Cup campaigns ended in heartbreak, further extending the nation's wait for an elusive World Cup trophy.

Men's T20 World Cup: A Narrow Defeat

In June, the South African men's team reached the final of the Men's T20 World Cup, where they faced off against the formidable Indian squad at the Kensington Oval in Barbados. The Proteas entered the match with high hopes, having demonstrated exceptional form throughout the tournament. Chasing a challenging target of 176 runs, the South African team seemed to be on course for victory thanks to an explosive innings from Heinrich Klaasen.

However, the familiar specter of the "chokers" tag reared its head once again. Despite being in a strong position and needing just 30 runs from 30 balls at one stage, the Proteas faltered and ultimately fell short by a mere 7 runs. This defeat was particularly gut-wrenching for the players and fans alike, marking the team's first-ever appearance in a T20 World Cup final, only to see their dreams dashed at the final hurdle.

Women's T20 World Cup: Another Close Call

The disappointment for South Africa did not end there. On October 20, the women’s cricket team faced New Zealand in the Women's T20 World Cup final held at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. This marked their second consecutive final appearance, following a heartbreaking loss to Australia in the 2023 final. Despite being the first South African women's team to reach a World Cup final, hopes were high that they could secure the title.

In the final match, the South African women restricted New Zealand to a modest 158 runs but struggled to chase down the target, finishing with only 126 runs for the loss of 9 wickets. The 32-run defeat left the players and fans devastated, marking another near-miss in their quest for World Cup glory.

A History of Near Misses

The losses in 2024 added to South Africa's lengthy history of World Cup heartbreaks. Since their debut in 1992, the men's team has faced several bitter defeats in World Cups, having reached the semi-finals in 1992, 1999, 2007, 2015, and 2023. Additionally, they have also suffered semi-final exits in the T20 format in 2009 and 2014. The women's team has had its share of disappointments as well, with semi-final finishes in the 2000, 2017, and 2022 50-Over World Cups, alongside similar exits in the T20 format in 2014 and 2020.

The Sole ICC Trophy

Amidst all the heartbreak, South Africa has managed to secure only one ICC trophy, the 1998 KnockOuts Trophy, where the men's team triumphed over the West Indies in the final. This stark contrast between the potential displayed in various tournaments and the ultimate failure to secure a World Cup title has left many fans yearning for more.
