Tahlia McGrath has been named as the captain of the Australian women’s cricket team for the upcoming three-match ODI series against India, set to begin on December 5. This announcement comes as regular captain Alyssa Healy will be sidelined due to a knee injury. The series will be held across three dates—December 5 in Brisbane, followed by matches on December 8 and 11 in Brisbane and Perth.

McGrath, the veteran all-rounder, is stepping up to lead the team after impressing in her leadership role during the recent T20 World Cup. Cricket Australia’s Head of Performance Women’s Cricket, Shawn Flegler, praised McGrath for her leadership under tough conditions in the World Cup, highlighting her ability to guide the team effectively in high-pressure moments.

The squad for this series sees a few changes, most notably the call-up of young Sydney Thunder batter Georgia Voll. This marks her first inclusion in the national team, following her strong performances in the Women’s Big Bash League. She will join experienced players like Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, and Annabel Sutherland, who are all expected to contribute significantly to the team’s success.

The India series is part of the ongoing ICC Women’s Championship, where Australia currently leads the standings. The team’s goal is to maintain their top position while preparing for the challenges posed by upcoming international competitions. After the India series, Australia will face New Zealand in another three-match ODI series, scheduled for December 19-23 in Wellington. This series will be an important part of their preparation for the Ashes series and the ICC Women’s World Cup next year.

Flegler also clarified that Healy’s absence from the India series is a strategic move designed to ensure her full recovery before the Ashes series. Healy’s return to the squad for the New Zealand series will be evaluated based on her fitness in the coming weeks.

The squad for the India series includes Darcie Brown, Ashleigh Gardner, Kim Garth, Alana King, Phoebe Litchfield, Tahlia McGrath, Sophie Molineux, Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, Annabel Sutherland, Georgia Voll, and Georgia Wareham. Healy is expected to return for the New Zealand series, with the team continuing to build towards the Ashes and World Cup next year. The focus remains on performing well in the ICC Women’s Championship, where every match counts toward securing a spot in upcoming tournaments.

With McGrath at the helm, Australia will look to build on their recent successes and maintain their dominance in world cricket, while ensuring the team is in top form for the challenges of the Ashes and the Women’s World Cup in the near future.
