In a historic day for both the USA and Nigeria, the two teams secured their first-ever victories in the ICC U19 Women's T20 World Cup, achieving their milestones in very different ways.
The USA delivered a dominant performance, defeating Ireland by a comfortable nine-wicket margin. This victory was a significant moment for the USA, as they had a winless campaign in the 2023 edition of the tournament. The team's performance in 2023 had provided them with valuable learning experiences, and they came into this year’s competition with a much-improved outlook.
Disha Dhingra played a pivotal role in the win, scoring an impressive 46 runs from just 33 balls. Her explosive knock included five boundaries and two sixes, setting a new record for the highest individual score by a USA batter in an ICC U19 Women’s World Cup. Reflecting on the victory, Dhingra expressed her delight, stating, "It feels absolutely amazing... all our hard work has paid off." She also mentioned the valuable lessons learned from their previous World Cup experience in South Africa, where they faced top-tier teams like Australia, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. "We took a lot of positives from South Africa and really brought that over here and got better," Dhingra added.
The USA’s bowlers had laid the foundation for the win, dismissing Ireland for just 75 runs. Isani Vaghela was the standout bowler, taking three wickets, two of which were caught and bowled. Her performance helped restrict Ireland to a manageable target. When the USA came to chase, Dhingra's quick-fire 46 set them on course, and although she was dismissed with the scores tied, Vaghela sealed the win with a boundary, securing a historic achievement for the USA team.
Meanwhile, Nigeria's journey to their first-ever win in the tournament was achieved in a different manner, but equally significant. Their victory marks a landmark achievement in their cricket history, further solidifying the growth of women’s cricket across the globe.
Both teams will now look to build on these victories and continue making their mark in the tournament, having established themselves as capable competitors on the world stage.
