This victory not only showcased their batting prowess but also eliminated England from the tournament, highlighting the stakes involved in this crucial match.

In a thrilling encounter, the West Indies secured their place in the semifinals of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024 by defeating England by six wickets. The standout performances came from openers Qiana Joseph and Hayley Matthews, who both played aggressive innings to chase down England's target of 142 with two overs to spare.

Joseph's innings of 52 runs, coupled with Matthews’ 50, set the tone for a commanding chase. Their partnership was instrumental, ensuring the West Indies maintained a healthy run rate throughout the innings. This victory not only showcased their batting prowess but also eliminated England from the tournament, highlighting the stakes involved in this crucial match.

England batted first and set a competitive total of 141, largely thanks to a resilient knock from Nat Sciver-Brunt, who scored an unbeaten 57. Despite a cautious start, the England team struggled to build momentum, especially after losing key wickets in quick succession. Maia Bouchier and Danni Wyatt-Hodge began the innings with some boundaries, but the West Indies' bowlers quickly turned the tide.

Deandra Dottin made a spectacular catch off Hayley Matthews' bowling to dismiss Wyatt-Hodge for 16, and just five balls later, Alice Capsey was run out after a brilliant throw from Dottin, leaving England at 34 for three. Sciver-Brunt and captain Heather Knight attempted to stabilize the innings, with Knight contributing 21 runs from 13 balls before retiring hurt in the 13th over. Amy Jones, who came in as a replacement, managed only seven runs as the pressure mounted on England's batting lineup.

As the innings progressed, England’s struggles continued, with contributions from Charlie Dean, Dani Gibson, and Sophie Ecclestone being minimal. Despite Ecclestone hitting a six in the final over, England could only muster a total of 141 runs, leaving them vulnerable against a potent West Indies batting lineup.

In response, Matthews and Joseph launched the West Indies’ innings with an explosive start. Matthews hit a six in the very first over, followed by Joseph, who struck a boundary on her first ball. Their partnership was swift, racing to 50 runs in just 27 balls, and they kept the required run rate well within reach. Joseph, who was dropped on 31 by Capsey, went on to score her maiden T20 international half-century before being dismissed for 52. Matthews also reached her half-century but was out shortly after for 50.

Even after the quick dismissals of their openers, the West Indies did not lose momentum. Deandra Dottin and Shemaine Campbelle continued to build on the solid foundation laid by Joseph and Matthews. Although Campbelle was run out for five and Dottin was bowled for 27, Aaliyah Alleyne stepped up and ensured victory by hitting a boundary on her first ball, sealing the chase with 12 balls remaining.

This victory not only secured the West Indies a spot in the semifinals, where they will face New Zealand, but also confirmed their advancement to the 2026 ICC Women's T20 World Cup alongside South Africa and hosts England. The match showcased the West Indies' resilience and talent, making them formidable contenders as the tournament progresses. With Australia also advancing from Group A, the upcoming semifinals promise to deliver high-stakes cricket as the teams vie for a place in the final.
