In a statement, he said he enjoyed his time with the team and appreciated the encouragement from fans, particularly the atmosphere at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Pakistan’s former captain Babar Azam will not feature in the Sydney Sixers’ Big Bash League 2025–26 knockout match after the franchise confirmed his release ahead of Qualifier 2 against the Hobart Hurricanes. The decision was taken due to Babar’s national commitments, with Pakistan preparing for a three-match T20 International series against Australia, which serves as a key build-up to the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup.

Babar was one of the most talked-about overseas signings of the season, with expectations running high when he joined the Sixers. However, his stint in the tournament did not go as planned. Across 11 matches, the right-handed batter managed 202 runs, struggling to find consistency in both strike rate and match impact. While he showed glimpses of his class, the performances fell short of the standards expected from a player of his stature.

The Sydney Sixers management confirmed that Babar’s release was in line with pre-agreed availability windows and Pakistan Cricket Board scheduling requirements. With the Pakistan national team entering a crucial phase of preparation, the PCB opted to recall Babar to ensure he is fully available for international duty.

The upcoming T20I series against Australia is considered vital for Pakistan, as it provides an opportunity to test combinations, assess player form, and adapt strategies ahead of the T20 World Cup. Given Babar’s experience and importance to the team, the selectors were keen to have him back in the national setup without delay.

Despite the early end to his BBL campaign, Babar expressed gratitude to the Sydney Sixers and their supporters. In a statement, he said he enjoyed his time with the team and appreciated the encouragement from fans, particularly the atmosphere at the Sydney Cricket Ground. He added that the experience offered valuable lessons and positive memories that he would carry back to Pakistan.

For the Sixers, Babar’s departure ahead of a knockout match presents a challenge, as the team must now adjust its batting lineup for a must-win game. However, the franchise had anticipated the possibility of his early exit and is expected to rely on its domestic core and remaining overseas players to fill the gap.

Cricket analysts note that overseas players leaving leagues for international duty is not uncommon, especially in seasons that overlap with major ICC events. While Babar’s individual numbers in the BBL were modest, his presence added global attention to the tournament and reinforced the league’s reputation as a platform for elite international talent.

As Babar returns to the international stage, attention will shift to how he performs for Pakistan in the Australia series. Strong performances could help him regain momentum and confidence ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup, where he remains a central figure in Pakistan’s plans.
