Both teams have recorded only two wins so far in the tournament, raising concerns about their chances of extending their perfect playoff qualification record.

The playoff race in the Women’s Premier League 2026 has entered a crucial phase, with traditional heavyweights Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians facing an unexpected challenge. Both teams have recorded only two wins so far in the tournament, raising concerns about their chances of extending their perfect playoff qualification record.

Delhi Capitals registered a vital seven-wicket victory over defending champions Mumbai Indians in the 13th match of the season at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara. Chasing a modest target, DC captain Jemimah Rodrigues led from the front with an unbeaten 51 off 37 deliveries. She was well supported at the top by Shafali Verma and Lizelle Lee, who provided a brisk start. Earlier, Shree Charani played a key role with the ball, claiming three wickets and restricting MI to a manageable total.

This result brought both Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians to two wins each in the standings. While MI currently occupy second place on the points table, they have already played six matches, one more than most teams. Delhi Capitals, with five matches played, have climbed to fourth position but trail on net run rate compared to their rivals.

Historically, teams have required a minimum of eight points to qualify for the WPL playoffs. With only a limited number of matches remaining, the margin for error has narrowed significantly. Mumbai Indians, in particular, face a tough scenario. Having already lost four matches, they must win both of their remaining league games to reach the four-win mark. Any further defeat would leave them dependent on other results and net run rate calculations.

Delhi Capitals, meanwhile, have slightly more flexibility due to having one game in hand. However, they too cannot afford multiple slip-ups. With several teams clustered on four points, the competition for the remaining playoff spots is intense. Net run rate could become a decisive factor if teams finish level on points.

The current WPL 2026 standings reflect the tight race. Royal Challengers Bengaluru have already secured qualification with five wins from five matches. Mumbai Indians, UP Warriorz, Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Giants are all tied on four points, separated only by net run rate. This congestion means every remaining match carries significant importance.

Both DC and MI have a strong history in the league, having reached the playoffs in all previous seasons and contesting the finals in 2023 and 2025. That experience could prove valuable as they attempt to navigate pressure situations in the coming games.

As the league stage progresses, consistency, discipline and net run rate management will be crucial. While qualification is still mathematically possible for both teams, the path ahead is demanding. Fans can expect high-intensity contests as Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians fight to keep their WPL playoff streaks alive.
