Yashasvi Jaiswal made a remarkable mark in cricket history on Day 2 of the first Test against Australia in Perth, surpassing a long-standing record set by Gautam Gambhir. The 22-year-old left-handed opener, in his 15th match, broke the 16-year-old record for the most runs by an Indian left-handed batter in a calendar year, previously held by Gambhir.
Gambhir, during his stellar year in 2008, had accumulated 1,134 runs at an impressive average of 70.67, including six fifties and three centuries. Jaiswal, who has been in superb form throughout 2024, surpassed this record by scoring his 1,135th run during India's second innings in Perth.
As the day concluded, Jaiswal's tally had reached 1,156 runs at an average of 55.04. His outstanding run in 2024 includes two double centuries, three centuries, and seven half-centuries, making it a breakthrough year for the young batter. His journey in 2024 began with dominant performances against England, where he amassed over 700 runs, which included two double centuries.
Despite a disappointing first innings in Perth where he was dismissed for a duck, Jaiswal exhibited remarkable resilience in the second innings, continuing his impressive form. This achievement highlights not only his consistency but also his ability to bounce back from setbacks, underlining why he is considered one of India's most promising young cricketers. With each milestone, Jaiswal is proving himself as a force to be reckoned with on the international stage.
